Spain's new 150kmh AI smart motorway: What you need to know

A new traffic initiative in Spain is turning heads, but not everyone is convinced it’s a good idea

Spain has just introduced a bold new move in its road systems and it’s one that’s making waves among drivers. A stretch of the AP-7 motorway in Catalonia has now raised its speed limit to 150kmh (93mph), making it one of the fastest public roads in Europe. But the really weird catch is that this speed limit will change based on real-time conditions, thanks to AI technology.

The Spanish Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) is calling this new system part of their “smart traffic” revolution. It’s designed to increase road safety and improve traffic flow by adjusting speed limits depending on the weather, traffic, time of day and even road conditions. On days when conditions are ideal – such as clear skies and minimal traffic – the limit can rise to 150kmh. But if the weather turns bad or traffic increases, the system will automatically lower the speed limit.

This new initiative applies to the 145-kilometre section of the AP-7 between Maçanet de la Selva and El Vendrell. Normally limited to 120kmh (75mph), this part of the motorway is now being used as a pilot project for Spain’s future traffic management system.

The idea of dynamic speed limits is not new. The UK, Germany and France already use similar technology to adjust speed limits, especially in areas prone to traffic jams or bad weather. Spain, however, has typically relied on fixed speed limits, and this marks the first time a major road in the country has introduced such high-tech flexibility.

While many are excited about the potential to reduce traffic jams and accidents, others are worried about the possible confusion this might cause drivers. It’s also crucial that the AI system works flawlessly to ensure the safety of all road users. According to the DGT, this is just the beginning. The government aims to expand these smart systems across Spain’s motorway network by 2025, with a focus on safety, efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions.

This cutting-edge initiative could very well pave the way for a safer and more efficient future on Spanish roads – but it’s clear that not all drivers are revved up about the change just yet.
