ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update November 15: incidence rate rises 11 points to 82
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The Ministry of Health in Spain has proposed a new traffic-light system for the Covid incidence rate
After two weeks of a staggered rise in the cumulative incidence rate in Spain, many communities are currently studying their options to prevent possible coronavirus outbreaks over the Christmas period, with areas such as the Valencian Community considering implementing a Covid passport system.
More generally, the Health Minister, Carolina Darias, has advised this week that regions should raise the acceptable infections rate at each alert level, to allow more freedom and time before restrictions have to be implemented. Her new traffic light system would mean that the high risk category will start from a cumulative incidence (AI) of 300 rather than the current 150, but also means that the ‘new normal’ level will be shifted from 25 cases to 50.
Cumulative incidence rate
While many countries in Europe face skyrocketing figures not seen since the beginning of the pandemic, Spain’s main indicator is also rising day after day, albeit at a slower rate. The 14-day incidence rate has risen 11 points over the weekend to reach 82.02 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Monday November 15, the highest figure since September 20.
Andalucía continues to be the community with the lowest incidence rate (excluding Ceuta), at 43 cases while Navarra is the highest at 203 cases, and five other regions have surpassed the 100-point range – the Basque Country, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, La Rioja and Catalonia.
The Ministry of Health in Spain has reported 9,798 coronavirus infections over the weekend, of which 1,288 have been registered in the past 24 hours.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 5,056,954.
Hospitalisations
At the beginning of November, Spain finally slipped below the threshold of average risk but the incidence has increased more than 30 points since the start of the month.
Fortunately, the soaring infections have not so far translated into increased hospital pressure, as the occupancy rate of Covid patients in the country’s ICUs remains at 4.6%, still below the risk limit of 5%.
There are currently 2,180 people hospitalised with Covid in Spain, with 427 in intensive care.
Fatalities
An additional 43 Covid-related fatalities have been reported since Friday, bringing the total death toll to 87,716.
Vaccination data
The vaccination campaign has been progressing rather slowly since it first began on December 27, with 90.6% of the target population (38,164,244 people) having received their first dose. A total of 37,474,324 people, or 89% of the population, are now fully vaccinated.
