Spain’s involvement in NATO’s air policing efforts in Eastern Europe took on renewed significance as two Spanish Air Force Eurofighters were scrambled in response to a Russian aerial intrusion into Romanian airspace this Thursday February 13.

Romania activated four fighter jets after its defence ministry detected a Russian drone entering its airspace. Among the aircraft deployed were two F-16s from the Romanian Air Force and two Spanish Eurofighters stationed in Romania as part of NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing Service.

The aerial object briefly crossed into Romanian territory before returning to Ukrainian airspace. By 1.10am, the air alert was lifted, and the jets returned to base.

The deployment of Spanish fighter jets highlights Spain’s increasing role in European security. Their presence in Romania is part of NATO’s strategy to deter potential threats in the Black Sea region, which has gained geopolitical significance since the war in Ukraine began.

The aerial incident came a day after Spain’s Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles, met with her Romanian counterpart, Angel Tîlvăr, at Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base. They discussed NATO’s military presence in Eastern Europe and regional security.

Robles also met with Spanish troops stationed in Romania under Operation ‘Persistent Effort’, a NATO mission focused on air defence and surveillance.

Romania, which shares a border with Ukraine and the Black Sea, has become a crucial NATO ally in security and logistics for Ukraine. With NATO bolstering its presence in Eastern Europe, Spanish forces play a key role in regional stability.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the EU has allocated over 135 billion euros in aid. Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have failed to deter Russian aggression, with Vladimir Putin unwilling to back down. However, recent developments have taken an unexpected turn, as US president Donald Trump is reportedly brokering a peace agreement with Moscow, seemingly bypassing both the EU and, to some extent, the Ukrainian government.

This latest geopolitical manoeuvre has raised concerns in Europe about the Union’s diminishing role in shaping the region’s future, particularly given the trade tariffs Trump has slapped on EU goods. With potential economic and security ramifications, European leaders now face a critical moment—whether to assert themselves or accept a settlement negotiated without their involvement.
