Four pubs in Spain made it into the top 20 worldwide
Spain is a nation of beer drinkers and for several years now has been known for its high quality tipples, but the country that brought us Alhambra and Estrella has marked a new milestone this month, with one Spanish bar being crowned the best in the world for the first time ever.
The World’s 50 Best Bars is an annual list that every self-respecting industry insider wants to be part of, and the top spots are usually dominated by establishments in the likes of New York and London. Not so in 2022, as one of the most famous cocktail bars in Barcelona has been afforded the honour.
But that’s not all: three other Spanish venues made it into the top 20, a ranking which is voted by 650 beverage experts from around the globe.
Salmon Guru: #15
Coming in at a very respectable number 15 on the Top 50 list is the Salmon Guru, a Madrid cocktail bar that first opened its doors back in 2016. This unique and colourful venue is decorated with comic book strips, neon lights and no end of kitch elements.
The bar is famous for its wacky cocktails served in a variety of novelty glasses and some of its more unusual creations, such as alcohol marinated in sea salt and drinks made with jam. Salmon Guru also offers an extensive food menu with a mixture of exotic and unusual flavours.
Two Smucks: #7
The first of the Barcelona trio to make it into the top spots is Two Smucks, located in the vibrant neighbourhood of El Raval. Owners Moe Aljaff and AJ White describe the pub as “a five-star dive” as it’s decked out with tattered sofas and battered old furniture.
Looks can be deceiving though, and Two Smucks serves up some of the most innovative and imaginative drinks in the country. Creations such as the Topinambur, a Martini with olive oil and chocolate, have led them to achieve this privileged position in the ranking.
Sips: #3
Taking the bronze medal this year is Sips, a bar without a bar on Calle Muntaner in Barcelona. Last year it entered The World’s 50 Best Bars list at number 37 and has skyrocketed in popularity since.
Also specialising in novel cocktail creations, instead of using an actual bar, the waiters mix the drinks on an island in the centre of the pub, offering a real show for customers. One of its bespoke beverages is the 'Thousand Fulls', a cocktail served with very thin sheets of ice interspersed with lemon and vanilla leaves.
Paradiso: #1
Paradiso climbed from number 3 last year to be crowned the world’s best bar in 2022. Designed to look like a tiny pastrami joint from the outside, Tuscan bartender Giacomo Giannotti has created his unique “speakeasy” with a tempting food menu and the planet’s most sought-after cocktails made in the Paradiso Lab.
This bar develops its menus using different themes: at the moment, it’s evolution. Its avant-garde cocktails are inspired by the history of mankind: the Fleming celebrates the discovery of penicillin, the Marco Polo was inspired by the compass, and the Paradiso Express pays homage to the Industrial Revolution.
