Spain sets out campervan parking rules as Easter travel rush begins
The traffic authorities in Spain have clarified inspections, parking rules and official service areas for motorhomes

With Easter just around the corner and thousands preparing to hit the road, Spain has set out updated rules for campervans and motorhomes, and it’s the parking side of things that’s already sparking debate.
The popularity of motorhome travel in Spain has exploded in recent years, with numbers up by around 185% over the past decade. That’s brought a welcome boost for local businesses like supermarkets, bars and restaurants, but not everyone is happy about how it’s playing out on the ground.
One of the biggest sticking points is where people choose to park. Many campervan users opt for free public car parks or coastal spots instead of paying for official campsites. Some residents have complained that vehicles can be left for long periods, take up valuable space and in some cases leave rubbish behind, creating a messy look in otherwise popular areas.
Under the latest instruction from Spain’s traffic authorities, motorhomes are allowed to stop and park under the same rules as any other vehicle, but there’s an important catch. Local councils still have the power to introduce their own restrictions, and these can include limits on how long vehicles can stay or outright bans in certain areas.
This means that even if a space looks like a normal parking area, drivers could still face fines if local rules prohibit campervans or overnight stays. Authorities explained that these measures are not about targeting motorhome users, but about avoiding problems such as blocked roads, safety concerns and unfair pressure on parking spaces.
Alongside the parking clarification, there are several other key updates that campervan and motorhome owners need to be aware of:
Vehicle inspections (ITV) now clearly defined
The rules differ depending on the type of vehicle:
- Motorhomes up to 4 years old do not need an ITV
- Between 4 and 10 years old require testing every 2 years
- Over 10 years old must be tested annually
- Campervans up to 10 years old require annual testing
- Over 10 years old must be tested every 6 months
Clear distinction between vehicle types
The updated guidance reinforces the difference between motorhomes and converted campervans, which affects how they are regulated and inspected.
New focus on designated motorhome areas
- Regions across Spain are continuing to develop dedicated service areas for motorhomes, treated as a form of tourist accommodation
- These areas must be properly equipped and clearly signposted
New road signage introduced
A new traffic sign now marks official points where motorhomes can empty wastewater safely.
Officials pointed out that the updated instruction also reflects legal guidance confirming that town halls have the authority to regulate parking through local by-laws. According to that interpretation, restrictions are intended to manage the impact of longer stays rather than stop people travelling in motorhomes altogether.
With one of the busiest travel periods of the year about to begin, anyone heading off in a campervan is being urged to check local rules before parking up. It could save a fine and help avoid some of the tensions that have been building in popular coastal areas.
