Several areas in Spain have already registered the coldest April morning in 40 years

Storm Ciril blasted through northern Spain over the weekend, bringing sub-zero temperatures and snow in many areas while leaving the south relatively unscathed. However, that’s all about to change from Monday April 4 as yet another storm, this time originating in the Canary Islands, is set to sweep up through the Gulf of Cadiz, lowering thermometers considerably and leaving strong storms, gusts and waves of up to six metres in its wake.

Spain welcomed April with decidedly wintery weather that left much of the country frozen with a late spring snowfall; in the Catalan Pyrenees, the mercury plummeted to 15 degrees below zero, while Zamora and Valencia recorded on Sunday April 3 the coldest April morning in 40 years.

The situation this week is looking little better according to Aemet, which has placed 21 provinces and the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla on orange alert for rain, snow, waves and frigid temperatures on Monday April 4.

The emerging storm will create cloudy skies across the southern half of the country and the Balearic Islands, with abundant and persistent rainfall, particularly in the southwest of Andalucía.

As all eyes turn south, the day-time temperatures will increase in the north of Spain but drop in the south and midlands on Monday.

There is to be little change on Tuesday April 5, with Andalucía once again expected to receive the worst of the rainfall. Cloudy and overcast skies will predominate and the showers will most likely turn stormy further south. The mercury will continue falling in the south and the Canary Islands, and frosts can’t be ruled out.

There are no weather warnings in place for Wednesday April 6, but the instability will continue in the southeast in general, with rains and showers sweeping in from west to east. The temperatures will thankfully begin to rise across the country, however, and the frosts will be isolated to mountainous areas.

The situation will improve considerably on Thursday April 7 when an anticyclone is expected to bring stability to much of Spain, However, due the approach of a new Atlantic front, there is a probability of weak and scattered rainfall in the north and west.

Daytime temperatures will continue their upward trend to reach a maximum of 23ºC in Alicante.
