Storm Ciaran brings country-wide weather alerts: Spain forecast November 2-5
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Red and orange warnings for torrential rain and hurricane-like gales have been issued across Spain
Weather outlook on Thursday November 2
After a Halloween break during which storm Ciarán focused mainly on the Cantabrian coast, the weather front has begun to spread across the country on Thursday November 2. This storm has been labelled “high impact” by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and has generated red and orange weather warnings across Spain for the next few days.
Storm Ciarán will result in widespread cloudy skies, heavy rain and even snowfall in the mountains, with gusts of up to 110kmh expected in northern Spain. Night-time temperatures will plummet across the board but the impact will be far less severe in the south of the country; in fact, the storm is hardly expected to touch the extreme southeast of Spain.
The wind will be the main concern on Thursday, entering the northwest in the morning with gusts exceeding 70kmh and reaching 90kmh in large parts of northern and inland Spain and the Balearic islands. These hurricane-like gales are even predicted to reach 100kmh in areas of the Cantabrian coast and the east and southeast.
At the same time, the wind gusts will be accompanied by torrential rain and stormy intervals in the north, especially Galicia, where up to 40 litres per square metre of rain is expected to fall in just one hour.
Throughout Thursday, a violent maritime storm will also hit the coast of Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea, where the waves will be higher than eight metres.
Night-time temperatures will drop dramatically across the country, dipping as low as 7ºC in parts of Castilla y León and 9ºC in Galicia. But although the weather will be extreme, daytime temperatures should remain very pleasant for this time of year, hitting the mid-20s in Valencia, Murcia and Seville.
The impact of Ciarán will continue to be felt on Friday November 3, although the rain will be more showery than heavy and much more dispersed than on Thursday. However, the rain will effect a large part of the country and the Balearic Islands and could be locally strong with storms in the north.
Weather outlook on Friday November 3
The wind will also ease off considerably in the southwest and central Spain but the sea storm will persist, especially on the Cantabrian coast, although the situation will improve as the day goes on.
Weather outlook on Saturday November 4
Far from abating over the weekend, it’s very likely that a new storm similar to Ciarán will impact the country again on Saturday November 4. The cloud cover will extend from the northeast to the southeast as the hours go by and most of Spain is in for rain, which this time will reach the Mediterranean, although in a much weaker way.
Weather outlook on Sunday November 5
It’s quite uncertain how the storm will evolve on Sunday November 5 but for the moment, Aemet is predicting that the worst of the weather will begin to move away towards the North Sea, gradually improving conditions overall.
