ARCHIVED - Storm Fien brings sub-zero temperatures to Spain: weather forecast Jan 16-19
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The first real winter storm of the season will bring “intense cold” to much of Spain this week
It might already be the middle of January, but the first “full winter episode” didn’t occur in Spain until Sunday January 15 with the arrival of a cold front that swept the country from northwest to southeast. Persistent rainfall was recorded in most areas, with the exception of the Mediterranean, but the State Meteorological Agency has warned of more unsettled days to come.
Monday January 16
The arrival of Storm Fien will result in intense cold and snowfall at low levels from the beginning of the week and the north of Spain will again be drenched on Monday, with particularly heavy showers in eastern Cantabria. The westerly wind will increase throughout the day, with very strong gusts forecast for the north and in the mountains of the east.
Temperatures will drop across the country and night frosts will hit large areas of the interior. In striking contrast though, most of the Mediterranean area will experience highs of around 20ºC.
A total of 16 regions, including Murcia, Andalucia and Valencia, are on yellow and orange alert for adverse sea conditions and gale-force winds.
Tuesday January 17
Aemet spokesperson Ruben del Campo expects the winter conditions to continue into Tuesday and even intensify as maritime polar air breaks in throughout the country and the Balearic Islands.
This will lead to a further drop in both temperatures and the snow level, which will fall to 700 meters in the north. Showers will also be recorded throughout Spain except in the extreme southeast, although the most intense and persistent will be recorded in the northern half of the country on Tuesday.
Half of Spain remains on alert for very strong winds.
Wednesday January 18
More bad news for Wednesday as a northerly wind will result in “very cold” weather as the thermometers dip below normal values for this time of year in many places. The plummeting mercury will be widespread but most notable in the north, which the snow level will fall to just 500 metres in central Spain.
The usually balmy Mediterranean coast will take a nosedive mid-week as the temperatures plummet by several degrees, falling to just 14ºC at the height of the day in Murcia.
Thursday January 19
It’s set to get even colder on Thursday as the snow levels drop to between 200 and 400 metres in the north, and abundant rainfall will be recorded in Cantabria. According to del Campo, the intensive and extensive frosts will continue that will likely lower the thermometers to -4ºC or -5ºC in the east and even to a baltic -10ºC in the mountains.
In several provincial capitals the mercury will barely touch 7ºC.
