Storm Patricia brings plummeting temperatures: Spain weather forecast August 3-6
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The weather front will also bring intense winds, rain and waves to many parts of Spain this weekend
Storm Patricia is winging her way towards Spain through northern Europe and will result in a “significant” drop in temperatures in the coming days, according to State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) spokesperson Ruben del Campo.
This Thursday August 3 and Friday August 4 will be marked by a sharp thermometer drop in most of the country and the Balearic Islands and the temperatures are likely to be around 5 or even 10ºC lower than normal in northern Spain.
Despite this dramatic change, it will still easily exceed 34-36ºC in Andalucia and southeast, and the minimums will not drop below 24-26ºC on the Mediterranean coasts of Andalusia and the Levant.
Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha and the Region of Murcia have all been issued with yellow warnings for heat on Thursday, but only Andalucia remains at risk of high temperatures on Friday.
The falling temperatures will be accompanied by cloudy skies and scattered showers in the north of Galicia and Cantabria and storms are very likely throughout the weekend in the Pyrenees and on the Balearic Islands. Heavy rain could also make an appearance in parts of Catalonia, the Valencian Community and areas of Albacete and Murcia.
"After these two cold days (Thursday and Friday), the temperatures will begin to rise in a general way over the weekend and, especially in the southern half, the intense heat will probably be the protagonist again during Sunday and the first days of next week," Del Campo has predicted.
In the extreme north, the cool conditions will continue on the morning of Saturday August 5 but the heat will persist in the south, and the temperatures will begin to ramp up again across the board as the weekend proper gets underway.
On this day, Huelva will reach a scorching 37ºC, which is why Andalucia has been issued with a yellow heat alert, while the Balearic Islands and Catalonia are under weather warnings for strong winds and rough sea conditions.
Over the weekend, temperatures will rise again, more pronounced in the northern half of the country, where the mercury will climb between 6 and 8ºC higher compared to Friday.
Thing will calm down and return pretty much to normal for this time of year by Sunday August 6, and the day is expected to be mostly clear. The exception again will be the northwest, where cloudy skies and showers are forecast.
The 34-36ºC-mark will be exceeded in the southern half of the Atlantic slope and 40ºC is more likely in the Guadalquivir and in the Guadiana of Extremadura. Night-time temperatures will also creep back up throughout Spain and the mercury won’t drop much below 25ºC in coastal points of Almería.
Storm Patricia was named by the French meteorological service Météo-France. Incredibly, this is the first time a storm has been named in an August since the programme was launched in 2017.
The current storm season began on September 1 2022 and will end on August 31, and 16 high-impact storms have been named so far in the cycle.
