Storms and showers continue into June: Alicante weather June 1-4

Alicante province has finally bid farewell to the wettest May since 1984, a month in which rainfall exceeded 95 litres per m2 in 13 days in the capital, the heaviest downpours the city has seen in 43 years.

And the first week of June, at least, looks set to be marked with more instability bringing further showers and storms.

According to Professor Jorge Olcina, director of the Climatology Laboratory at the University of Alicante, the cause of the exceptionally rainy May and start to June is due to the settlement of high pressure in the north of France and the British Isles.

"We continue into June with low pressure conditions and cold air in the upper layers. We find ourselves with a very unbalanced atmospheric situation and it can be sunny at dawn but in the afternoon, a storm can form and dump rain, just as happens in tropical weather.

"These rains have come as a godsend and allow us to ward off the spectre of water restrictions for this summer because the drought threat is still there. They are certainly very beneficial waters that are stored in the subsoil and save on irrigation, but we must call for a prudent and responsible use of water in the agricultural, urban, industrial and leisure sectors," added the climatologist.

In line with the expert's forecast, Thursday June 1 will get off to a sunny or partially cloudy start, but from midday onwards, the clouds will build and showers are likely, particularly in the north, accompanied by thunderstorms. Temperatures will remain pretty much unchanged, and an easterly wind will be generally light with moderate intervals in the afternoon.

Alicante: 18ºC to 24ºC

Denia: 16ºC to 25ºC

Elche: 16ºC to 25ºC

Orihuela: 16ºC to 27ºC

Friday June 2 is likely to pan out very much the same; clear or cloudy intervals in the morning followed by showers in northerly inland areas, locally heavy and with thunderstorms. Wind from the east will be generally light with moderate north-easterly intervals on the coast.

Alicante: 16ºC to 25ºC

Denia: 17ºC to 25ºC

Elche: 15ºC to 25ºC

Orihuela: 16ºC to 25ºC

Moving into the weekend, and Saturday June 3 will see clouds gather from midday, following a sunny start, and showers with occasional thunderstorms further inland. A light variable wind will tend towards east and southeasterly from mid-afternoon.

Alcoy: 12ºC to 23ºC

Alicante: 17ºC to 25ºC

Denia: 16ºC to 25ºC

Elche: 15ºC to 25ºC

Orihuela: 16ºC to 26ºC

The week will round off with a sunny but partially cloudy start to Sunday June 4 and showers with occasional thunderstorms in the afternoon, more likely inland and in pre-coastal areas. Again, a light variable wind will tend towards east and southeasterly from mid-afternoon.
