Stormy and wet week ahead: Spain weather forecast Oct 16-19
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Rain will be widespread across all of Spain this week as several storms set in
The arrival of several stormy Atlantic fronts at the end of the weekend have brought an end to the Indian summer and the weather over the coming days promises to be far more autumnal.
From the beginning of the week, scattered rain is forecast across practically all of Spain although the worst of the storms should be confined to the north of the country.
Monday October 16
The trend which began over the weekend will continue on Monday and Atlantic low pressures will create a rather dark and gloomy day in most of the country. Widespread showers are expected with heavier bouts of rain forecast in the west of Spain and in the northeast. The stormy episodes are predicted in coastal areas of Catalonia but there’s a chance they could spread to Menorca and northern Mallorca in the afternoon.
Night-time temperatures will tend to rise but the day will be much cooler in most areas, with the exception of the extreme northwest. Strong winds from the south will affect western Galicia.
The Balearic Islands, Catalonia and the Valencian Community have been issued with a yellow alert for rain.
Tuesday October 17
Tuesday is expected to be much more unstable due to the entry of a second storm through Galicia, which will sweep across the entire country in a matter of hours, leaving more abundant and widespread rainfall throughout Spain, especially in the west and in mountainous areas, as well as strong gusts of wind, particularly on the Atlantic coast.
Daytime temperatures will take another dip in the Canary Islands, the southwest and the Valencian Community while increasing elsewhere. However, much of the country will still see values in the mid to high 20s.
An orange weather alert has been issued in Galicia while yellow warnings remain in place in Andalucia, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y Leon, Extremadura and Navarra for strong winds and rain.
Wednesday October 18
Wednesday looks set to be something of a transition day as we wait for the arrival of another Atlantic storm that will lead to mostly cloudy skies with generally weak rain throughout. However, these showers are unlikely to reach the Mediterranean area. Much later in the day, the arrival of a new front will led to plenty of stormy episodes in the north of the Canary Islands.
Few changes are expected temperature-wise although areas like Murcia and Valencia will see the mercury shoot up into the low 30s.
A yellow alert for rough seas remains in place in Galicia.
Thursday October 19
A new Atlantic low located on the northwest of Spain will result in very cloudy skies from early on Thursday morning and widespread rainfall that will sweep the country from west to east as the day goes on.
Daytime temperatures will fall across the board, more noticeably inland, but there could be some rises in the west of the Canary Islands.
Southwesterly winds will predominate throughout with some particularly strong gusts in coastal areas.
