Stormy end to August: Spain weather forecast Aug 26-29
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
A DANA could result in widespread rain and storms in much of Spain by the weekend
Weather outlook on Thursday August 29
Spain could be in for a pretty dramatic end to the month, according to meteorologists. The coming week will begin in the usual fashion, with plenty of sunshine and fine weather but as we approach the weekend, yet another DANA (Isolated High Level Depression) could form over the country, bringing widespread rain and storms.
To kick off the week though, a subtropical ridge means most of Spain will enjoy bright, dry weather on Monday August 26, although there will be localised showers and storms in the afternoon in the eastern Pyrenees and the south-eastern mountain ranges.
The showers will most likely spread further south to the Strait on Tuesday August 27, but they will still be light. Mostly clear skies are forecast elsewhere, but the cloud cover will start to gather towards the afternoon, particularly in the north. There’s also a good chance of storms in Tenerife.
The skies to the northwest of Spain will become increasingly overcast on Wednesday August 28 due to the approach of a low pressure system from the Atlantic, which will also leave light rainfall in inland parts of eastern Spain, the extreme south and the northwest.
According to meteorologist for Meteored, Duncan Wingen, these showers and storms could extend to more areas and gain intensity from Thursday August 29, although this will depend on whether the low pressure system persists and, if it does, where it eventually settles.
Temperature-wise, the first half of the week will sizzle, with highs of 37-39°C (even hitting 40°C in some places) in Sevilla, Cordoba, Jaen, Badajoz and Ciudad Real. Tropical nights and sweltering days will be felt on the shores of the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands coast and in the southwest in general, as well as the valleys of the Tajo, Guadiana and Guadalquivir, and the south of Madrid.
Meanwhile, the northern half of the country will offer a respite from the heat, with minimum temperatures of 12 to 17°C and even dipping below 10°C in mountainous regions and parts of Castilla y León.
Tuesday and Wednesday will see the heat expand, with temperatures soaring above 35°C in the Ebro depression, southern Madrid, northern plateau points and inland areas in the eastern half of Spain.
But just when things are getting steamy, a trough will arrive on Thursday, bringing a welcome cool-down. By then, only the Guadalquivir valley will be basking in temperatures above 35°C.
