Stormy start to the week: Spain weather forecast Sept 18-21
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Temperatures will drop in inland Spain but the mercury could exceed 30ºC in the Mediterranean
Weather alerts for Monday September 18
Last weekend brought many weather extremes to several parts of Spain, from torrential rains and terrifying electrical storms to gusts of winds of up to 70-80 km/h and waves reaching 4 metres. The coming week will start out just as unstable although things should settle down as the days go by.
The Isolated Cold Storm (BFA) that created the weekend’s chaos will be history in a few more hours as it’s absorbed into a broader weather trough that will cross the north of the country throughout Monday September 18.
Forecast for Monday September 18
At the same time, a small DANA will centre on the Gulf of Cádiz and the Canary Islands and the remains of the BFA will result in widespread showers in Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea, as well as some afternoon storms around the Pyrenees.
The daytime temperatures will tend to fall across the board, with the exception of the Atlantic coast, although the likes of Malaga and Murcia are still tipped to hit 31ºC.
Yellow weather warnings on Monday: Balearic Islands (alert for ‘rissaga’, or sudden wave swells of more than two metres), Cantabria (adverse sea conditions), Galicia (heavy rainfall), Basque Country (adverse sea conditions).
Forecast for Tuesday September 19
On Tuesday September 19 the approaching DANA could move into the Mediterranean coast, bringing abundant cloudiness and a good chance of showers and stormy intervals in the southeast and the west of the Balearic Islands. A bright start will give way to overcast skies during the afternoon in much of the rest of the country.
The mercury will continue to climb along the Atlantic coast and decrease in the Mediterranean with few changes elsewhere.
No weather alerts have been issued for Tuesday.
Forecast for Wednesday September 20
There’s still a great deal of uncertainty but at the moment the forecast indicates that the DANA will gather strength on Wednesday September 20, resulting in heavy downpours in the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands. Very intense rainfall is expected in the Region of Murcia, eastern Castilla-La Mancha, the Valencian Community and Aragón, according to the experts at Meteored.
Throughout the country, slightly cloudy skies will become increasingly overcast as the Atlantic front moves from southwest to northeast during the day.
No big changes are expected temperature-wise, and there are no weather warnings in place for Wednesday.
Forecast for Thursday September 21
The incoming Atlantic front will sweep the country on Thursday September 21, bringing cloudy or overcast skies and pretty widespread rainfall. However, as the unsettled weather looks set to move from the northwest to the southeast, it’s unlikely to impact the Balearic Islands or the Mediterranean too much. As the front passes, the skies will begin to clear later on Thursday but some showers could still persist in the Galicia and Cantabria.
Meanwhile, daytime temperatures will rise in the Mediterranean while remaining largely unchanged elsewhere.
Between Monday and Thursday, the temperatures will be lower than normal inland, dropping below 10ºC in many mountainous areas and leading to especially chilly early mornings. On the other hand, in the Mediterranean, the week will be slightly warm with tropical nights in coastal areas and a sultry feel throughout the day. The balmy temperatures will be particularly apparent in the Balearic Islands and along the coasts of Valencia and Catalonia, where it’s expected the summery heat could continue for another few weeks yet.
