Suffocating heat and intense storms: Spain weather forecast July 4-7
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Very mixed weather ends the first week of July in Spain, with heavy rain and scorching temperatures
Weather warnings for high temperatures on Friday
July got off to a pleasant enough start with lots of sunshine and heat, and the temperatures will continue to climb as the days go by, as you’d expect in the middle of summer. However, despite the fact that a subtropical ridge is forecast to appear in the Atlantic before the weekend, showers and even thunderstorms will also make an appearance.
In fact, heavy rains were already recorded on Monday July 1 in the Mediterranean coastal area, which together with gusts of wind and hail, made for a most unusual start to the month.
This episode was repeated on Wednesday morning, July 3, to a lesser extent, with isolated rainfall in the east of Spain, especially strong in Catalonia and in the Balearic islands.
As we move towards the weekend, the settled weather will return to most of the country on Thursday July 4 with mostly bright and sunny skies. The thermometers will peak at a sweltering 40-43ºC in the extreme southwest and large parts of Andalucía have been issued with an orange heat warning.
Storm clouds will begin to gather in northern Spain on Friday July 5 where plenty of rain is forecast. In the rest of the country, it will be a slightly cloudy day after an especially overcast start in the Mediterranean.
Most of the heat warnings have been downgraded to yellow, but temperatures will still hover around 36ºC in much of the Atlantic and Ebro slopes, and even 40ºC in areas of the Tajo, Guadiana and Guadalquivir. Another tropical night is expected on the coasts of the eastern Mediterranean area.
The rain will return on Saturday July 6 thanks to the arrival of a very wide weather front that will impact the entire country. The first and heaviest of the storms will hit the Cantabrian coast, but this will spread to all of Spain throughout the morning. During the afternoon, very intense episodes of rain and gusts are forecast in Castilla y León, La Rioja, Aragón and Navarra.
Despite the rain, the tropical nights will continue, although the day-time temperatures will fall in most areas.
From Sunday July 7 onwards, the situation should be much less adverse, although the rainfall will continue in large parts of northern Spain. The rest of the country will be partly cloudy and the temperatures should start to creep up again, remaining around the 35-degree mark in much of the south.
