Temperatures plummet by 10 degrees: Spain weather forecast December 14-17
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Overall the weekend in Spain should remain dry and bright but it will be much cooler
Weather outlook on Saturday December 16
Spain has just registered its warmest December day of all time, a final reminder that 2023 has been absolutely exceptional weather-wise. Following temperatures that tipped an incredible 30°C in large parts of the Mediterranean, the country is in for a drastic change as we approach the weekend.
A new front will cross the country from the northwest from the middle of the week, bringing along a mass of cold air that will see the temperatures collapse. But while regions like Murcia and Alicante could literally see the thermometers drop by 10 or even 12ºC overnight, the weather will remain pleasantly wintery: crisp, frosty and mostly dry over the weekend.
Thursday December 14
The northwesterly flow will leave cloudy skies in its wake, along with generally weak rainfall in the extreme north of the country. These showers, occasionally stormy, could easily spread to the east of the Balearic Islands, but the rest of Spain should stay dry if rather overcast.
Gone are the summery temperatures. The mercury will continue to fall everywhere but the northwest, dropping from over 29ºC to just 19ºC in record-breaking Malaga.
The trade winds will intensify in the Canary Islands with strong intervals and northwesterly gusts are forecast in much of the rest of the country.
The weather will begin to stabilise on Friday, although the skies will still be mostly cloudy and early morning rain, sometimes heavy, is expected in the north.
Daytime temperatures will increase ever so slightly in most of the country, with the exception of the Mediterranean coasts, while the night will be much cooler in the north and east.
Strong intervals of winds are still forecast in places but this too will begin to ease off later in the day.
The welcome anticyclone affecting all of Europe will bring mostly clear skies to Spain on Saturday, although many areas will be a little more overcast very early in the morning and late in the evening.
Nighttime temperatures will tend to fall across the board while few changes are expected with the maximums.
Yellow weather warning for rough seas: Andalucia, Balearic Islands, Catalonia.
Sunday December 17
An anticyclonic situation will continue, leaving slightly cloudy skies in most of the country, while more overcast skies are only expected in the Balearic Islands and around the Strait and Alborán.
Temperatures will fall in the Canary Islands and in a general way across the south of the country.
