The big freeze arrives in Spain: weather forecast Dec 27-Jan 1

Weather outlook on New Year’s Eve

Those glam New Year’s Eve outfits will have to be covered up with heavy coats and warm layers as the elusive cold which has been absent practically all year finally makes an appearance as we prepare to welcome in 2024.

Over the next few days, temperatures will plummet across Spain, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), with frost, heavy episodes of rain and even snow on the horizon.

Wednesday December 27

In most of Spain, particularly in the south and the Balearic Islands, the anticyclonic weather will continue, giving rise to mostly clear skies and pleasant weather during the central hours. However, abundant low morning cloudiness, accompanied by mists and fogs, will lead to heavy frosts in parts.

On the other hand, the entry of an Atlantic front is expected in the northwest of the country, leaving cloudy or overcast skies in its wake, with rainfall in Galicia and western Asturias, which could end up affecting the rest of the Cantabrian Sea in a weaker way.

Daytime temperatures will fall in the north and along the Mediterranean coast while the mercury will dip into the very low single digits everywhere on Wednesday night.

Thursday December 28

An Atlantic front is expected to leave a predominance of cloudy or overcast skies, although this will be far less pronounced in the southeast of the country. Rain will be restricted to Galicia, Asturias and northwest Castilla y León.

Maximum temperatures will decrease in the Cantabrian Sea, Catalonia and east of Castilla La Mancha, while the evening will be noticeably cooler in the southeast. Meanwhile, weak frosts are expected in most inland areas.

Friday December 29

Mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands will to be exposed to a humid Atlantic flow that will leave a predominance of cloudy or overcast skies throughout Friday, although the rain will again be confined to the north.

Daytime temperatures will drop in areas of Galicia, the Pyrenees, the Balearic Islands, the Atlantic coast of Cádiz and the southeast of the country, with increases predominating in the rest.

Saturday December 30

Saturday will be a little warmer in the southeast and along the Mediterranean coast, but the mercury still won’t climb much above the mid-teens at the height of the day. As for the evening, temperatures won’t rise above single digits anywhere but the Canary Islands.

Ongoing Atlantic fronts are expected to leave overcast skies and plenty rain in the northwest, and while this could extend to large parts of the country, the southeast should remain dry.

Sunday December 31

Aemet expects mostly stable weather throughout Spain and the Balearics on New Year’s Eve, although abundant low clouds inland will give rise to fog along the northern coast of Murcia. Later in the day, an Atlantic frontal system could approach, bringing increased cloudiness to the northwest of the country where weak rainfall hasn’t been ruled out.

Temperatures should rise a little in the south but widespread frosts are forecast in mountainous areas.

Monday January 1

The forecast for New Year’s Day is still a little uncertain but at the moment it’s looking like the Atlantic front will persist, bringing cloudy skies with clear spells to much of Spain and the Balearic Islands. Temperatures should rise by a couple of degrees in the southwest although the winds will grow in intensity as the hours go by, blowing from the west and south.
