A scenic 4.6-km route just outside the city centre of Lorca

The Cejo de los Enamorados mountain hiking Trail in Lorca The Cejo de los Enamorados walking or hiking trail is a 4.6-kilometre route heading west out of the city of Lorca from the La Merced visitors’ centre in the general direction of the reservoir of Puentes, but instead of taking the more direct route to the reservoir along the RM-701 road, the “Vía Augusta”, it meanders off into the mountains and some breathtaking scenery.

The Cejo de los Enamorados mountain hiking Trail in Lorca As it is a short route it takes only around an hour and a half to complete at a “normal” pace, and as of April 2026, after renovation on a couple of bridges and the signposting, has been added to Spains’ “Blue Trail” (Sendero Azul) network. This is in recognition of its contribution towards sustainable development and tourism, and thanks are due not only to the Town Hall but also to the regional government of Murcia for financing the improvements.

The Cejo de los Enamorados mountain hiking Trail in Lorca The walk is in the mountains of the Sierra de la Peñarrubia, and from the car par kit is possible to see all the way to the geological feature and the freshwater spring of the “Cejo de los Enamorados” itself. This is a vertical sandstone rock face which has been formed by the water from an aquifer, the source of the spring on the surface.

The Cejo de los Enamorados mountain hiking Trail in Lorca It should be noted that the Blue Trail network is now extending rapidly in the Region of Murcia, and in 2026 this walk is joined by the Senda del Arroz in Calasparra, the Paso Ribereño in Cieza, the Sendero Botánico de Santa Ana in Jumilla, the riverfront walk of the Contraparada in Murcia and the area around Monte Arabí in Yecla in being added to the 26 walks already included in 2025.

The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites and historic buildings around which the modern city has built its tourism industry. Amongst these are Lorca Castle, Plaza de España, the former Collegiate church of San Patricio, the municipal archaeological museum, the Casa Huerto Ruano, the Palacio de Guevara and the churches and convents of San Francisco, San Mateo, the Virgen de las Huertas, La Merced, El Carmen and many others.

Unfortunately, Lorca has been prone to natural disaster, suffering a severe flood in 1973 which killed 50 people, and a Gota Fría on September 28^th 2012, as well as a series of earthquakes, the most recent of which was 5.3 on the Richter scale on 11^th May 2011 and claimed 9 lives.

Lorca Tourist Office Lorca also has an area of unspoilt coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, which includes the beaches of Puntas de Calnegre, Cala Calnegre and various others. Although only one is accessible by road others can be reached along dirt tracks!

In terms of fiestas, Lorca is synonymous with Easter (Semana Santa), its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status being famous throughout Spain. The week includes a series of parades in which the whites (Paso Blanco) and blues (Paso Azul) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.

In the Autumn Lorca also celebrates the Fiestas of San Clemente and a Feria and there are a series of important events throughout the year in the Recinto Ferial, as well as a busy cultural and sporting programme.

The tourist office relocated for 14 years to Calle San Patricio, near the church, but has now returned to its former premises alongside the Palacio de Guevara in the Plaza Concha Sandoval, or Plaza de la Bordadora (click for map).
