This weather phenomenon, which has already resulted in the deaths of 360 people, is caused by an anticyclone near Ireland and a DANA (isolated high-level depression) to the west of Spain, that has been pushing a mass of very dry air across the country.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), while the mercury continued to rise in the north of the Peninsula on Sunday July 17, “a thermal drop” began in the southwest.
The change will be far from sudden and no fewer than 20 provinces remain on alert for extreme temperatures above 40ºC on Monday July 18. In general, Aemet predicts that the day will be cloudy with some showers and even storms forecast in the north of the country. The thermometers will begin to drop most notably in western Spain and the heatwave will officially end.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Monday:
Alicante: 24ºC min; 34ºC max
Almeria: 24ºC min; 35ºC max
Malaga: 22ºC min; 33ºC max
Murcia: 22ºC min; 37ºC max
The decline in temperature will be felt in “large areas of the Peninsula” by Tuesday July 19, according to Aemet, and while the mercury “will still be abnormally high,” it certainly won’t reach the heights of recent days.
Several communities remain on alert but there are no red weather warnings in place.
The day will be cloudy again for the most part with some mist and fog forecast for the south. Maximum temperatures will remain well above 30ºC in Mallorca and much of the south, exceeding 40ºC in the Ebro valley.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Tuesday:
Alicante: 23ºC min; 34ºC max
Almeria: 23ºC min; 32ºC max
Malaga: 24ºC min; 32ºC max
Murcia: 21ºC min; 38ºC max
On Wednesday July 20, with the departure of the DANA, Aemet warns that “it is likely” that temperatures will increase again, “but mainly in the peninsular southwest quadrant.”
Suspended dust is likely in the south of Spain and the Canary Islands, where night-time temperatures are also expected to rise slightly.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Wednesday:
Alicante: 23ºC min; 32ºC max
Almeria: 24ºC min; 34ºC max
Malaga: 24ºC min; 30ºC max
Murcia: 21ºC min; 36ºC max
There are no weather warnings in place at all for Thursday July 21 and another cloudy day is forecast, with the possibility of some showers and isolated storms in the southeast of Andalucia.
In most of Spain, however, stable, dry and sunny weather will prevail.
