The Iberian oven is cranked up: Spain weather forecast July 17-20
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Temperatures will reach the mid 40s this week as the third summer heatwave hits Spain
More than 30 provinces across Spain are on alert for scorching temperatures as the country begins a new week at the mercy of the third heatwave of the summer. A widespread anticyclone, located at the moment in the surrounds of Tunisia and the central Mediterranean mean that large parts of Andalucia will reach a sweltering 44ºC on Monday while much of the rest of the country will hover around the mid-30s.
After a pretty stifling weekend all round, the so-called Iberian oven will be cranked up to full blast on Monday July 17. The highest temperatures will be reached in the centre and interior south of the country and the Guadiana Valley, according to the State Meteorologist Agency (Aemet), which expects the mercury to exceed 40ºC in these areas, and even 44ºC in some parts.
Cloudy intervals are forecast in Cantabria, northern Galicia, the Levante and the Balearic Islands but the rest of the country should remain clear, although it will grow progressively more overcast in inland areas of the east where occasional stormy showers could be accompanied by very strong gusts.
Red alert for high temperatures: Andalucia.
Orange alert for high temperatures: Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Madrid.
Yellow alert for high temperatures: Aragon, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, Region of Murcia, Navarra, La Rioja and the Valencian Community.
There will be a noticeable temperature increase in eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands on Tuesday July 18, while the thermometers will remain the same or decrease ever so slightly along the Atlantic coast.
Inland and southern Spain will continue to bear the brunt of the heatwave, easily exceeding 40ºC in large chunks.
Most of the country will be dry and sunny although cloudiness will increase as the day goes on in Galicia, Cantabria and Navarra, moving from west to east, with probable weak and scattered rainfall. Similarly, occasional cloud cover will dot the Strait, Alborán and eastern Mediterranean area towards the afternoon.
High Saharan dust clouds are also forecast in much of Spain.
Red alert for high temperatures: Aragon, Balearic Islands and Catalonia.
Orange alert for high temperatures: Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Region of Murcia, Navarra, Basque Country, La Rioja and the Valencian Community.
Yellow alert for high temperatures: Extremadura and Castilla y Leon.
Another bright, dry day is forecast in most parts on Wednesday July 19. However, cloudy skies with scattered showers are expected in the Bay of Biscay while it will be a largely overcast morning in in eastern Galicia, northern Castilla León, Navarra and La Rioja. Early cloud cover in the southeast and the Balearic Islands should disperse quickly but occasional dry storms and isolated showers are a strong possibility later in the day in the east.
A pronounced drop in temperatures is expected from the northwest, although the mercury will remain high in large areas of the interior south and southeast of the country, the Balearic Islands and, with greater uncertainty, central Spain. The thermometers should continue to register above 40ºC in the southeast and another tropical night will punish those in the Balearic Islands and the Mediterranean coast.
Orange alert for high temperatures: Andalucia, Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Region of Murcia and the Valencian Community.
Yellow alert for high temperatures: Aragon, Catalonia and Extremadura.
The heatwave should end at last on Thursday July 20 with a dramatic drop in temperatures in the entire country, more sharply in the southwest and east of the country and in Mallorca. Scattered low morning clouds are expected in southern Galicia, northern Castilla y León, upper Ebro and areas of Navarra, as well as in different areas of the Mediterranean area.
During the afternoon the cloud cover will increase in eastern Spain with a chance of occasional showers and dry storms.
No weather warnings have been issued for Thursday.
