A half-kilo tablet of the popular Christmas treat created in Jijona, Alicante province, costs a whopping 250 euros
Created using gold leaf, Italian white truffle, Indonesian Kopi Luwak coffee beans and saffron from La Mancha, turrón '1880' is an exclusive sweet tablet made in Jijona, Alicante under the slogan "the most expensive in the world", priced at 250 euros for half a kilo.
The popular special edition Christmas nougat treat made from Alicante almonds and orange blossom honey is the work of Turronera '1880', which was founded in 1725 by Bautista Sirvent and has been in business for 11 generations.
"1880 decided to bring out a select collection made to order consisting of three varieties in 500 gram tablets priced at 250 euros each, the most expensive nougat in the world, to mark the very first celebration of World Nougat Day", explained Marketing Director, Beatriz Sirvent.
"In fact, a limited edition of the Alicante turrón sold at the new 'Casa 1880' shop in Madrid is worth more in economic terms than a diamond because of its extremely high culinary value", she added.
The sweet-makers claim the intense flavour of the white truffle used to make the turrón makes a "perfect" pairing with the Alicante almonds, to which is added the gold leaf, handmade in a thin sheet that melts in the mouth, which provides "an aesthetic luxury like a golden marble".
The second "most expensive type of turrón in the world" created by 1880 in Xixona, is also made using the sought-after ingredient, Indonesian Kopi Luwak coffee beans, considered the most select on the planet.
Harvested after being ingested and expelled in its faeces by a civet, similar to a weasel, this coffee bean is hailed as a "gastronomic gem" because it acquires a "balanced acidity" and takes on a more intense flavour than conventional coffee.
It's paired with the creaminess of soft Jijona nougat and sprinkled on top of the tablet to enhance the flavour.
The third and last variety of 1880 costly nougat contains the highly prized saffron from La Mancha, with Protected Designation of Origin, which adds a "sensual touch" thanks to its high-colouring power and "powerful and exotic aroma", according to the director.
The limited edition 250-euro bars are sold in the 1880 shop in Madrid and online and the company has already received plenty of orders both nationally and internationally.
During 2021, the 1880 expects to manufacture around 300 tonnes of products, mainly nougat but also chocolates, Christmas sweets and marzipan, with a turnover of 22 million euros.
The firm currently exports 20% of its products to more than 40 countries, mainly to Europe, Latin America and the United States, and in the last year, online sales have reportedly shot up by 65% compared to 2020.
