It’s been a cold and blustery few days across Spain and several parts of the country were beset by driving rain, metres-high waves and violent gales. Mid-week, most regions were issued with weather alerts and sadly, storm Fien resulted in the death of an 80-year-old man in the Basque port of Bermeo when he was dragged out to sea.

We’re in for a bit of a reprieve over the weekend though, as a warm front will pass through the peninsula on Thursday January 19, but this too will be short-lived. Although it has been the coldest morning of the winter so far, as the day progresses the snowfall will be confined to mountain areas and the rainfall will be less persistent and widespread overall.

Having said this, several communities including Andalucia and Murcia remain on alert for strong gusts, which will continue throughout the weekend.

The storm will peter out on Friday January 20 giving rise to an anticyclone that will bring stable weather to most of Spain. The temperatures will rise in the north, especially at night, with the thermometers jumping up 7 or 8ºC compared to Thursday.

This temperature increase will limit the hard frosts to mountainous areas and while it will continue to rain heavily in the extreme north, the south should be mostly dry if overcast.

Temperatures along the Mediterranean coast will remain in the mid to high-teens on Friday but the Valencian Community has been issued with an orange warning late in the day for wind and adverse sea conditions.

On Saturday January 21 the anticyclonic weather will prevail, the sun shining in most of the country, according to meteorologist at Meteored, José Manuel Viñas. Due to little cloud cover, the early morning will feel extremely cold though, a trend that will continue through the next few days.

The Balearic Islands will experience freezing minimum temperatures but there will be little change in the rest of the country, although the thermometers will creep up in the south, with the mercury in Alicante and Murcia swinging between 16 and 18ºC.

Similar to the weather patterns last week, a major change is forecast Sunday January 22 when the temperatures will drop four or five degrees below zero in large parts of inland Spain. Even along the normally mild Mediterranean coast the night will be very cold, dipping to just 2ºC in Alicante and not exceeding 12ºC during the day.

Even with the plummeting temperatures, Sunday will be bright and mostly sunny with the possibility of strong gusts in the mountains.
