These are the new road signs that will come into effect in Spain in 2023

Traffic warning signs in Spain will undergo drastic modernisation next year, as the roads bid farewell to the outdated signals and welcome new ones which represent the current dangers, such as high-speed train crossings and electric scooter and bike lanes.

Although the new road signs have already been designed by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), there doesn’t seem to be any push to implement them and it’s unlikely they’ll hit the Spanish roads before the middle of 2023.

As well as responding to modern-day road safety issues, the authorities want the signs to be more visible and with fewer “gender connotations”. To this end, the pictograms have been updated and certain signals, like the one warning of children crossing, will soon feature both a girl and a boy.

New road signs for 2023

P-35: Danger when merging where vehicles have to change lanes, resulting in cars possibly crossing paths and therefore increasing the risk of collision.

P-24a: This sign will be placed along sections of road where animals are likely to cross. The vast majority of these will refer to wild boars, which have caused an increasing number of accidents in recent years.

P-33: Danger of driver visibility being hampered by fog, rain, snow, smoke etc.

P-8: The old-fashioned sign featuring a 19th century train will be replaced by a modern design aimed at warning of a level crossing not protected by barriers.

P-20a: Danger due to the proximity of one or more pedestrian crossings.

P‐21b: Danger due to the proximity of a place frequented by the elderly, such as a nursing home, day centre etc.

Q-21a: Now complete with a picture of both genders, this sign warns motorists that they are in an area with a potentially large volume of children, such as a school or playground.

P‐22a: Danger due to the proximity of one or several crossings for cyclists.

R‐2: Obligation for all drivers to stop their vehicle at the next stop line.

R-118: This novel sign will depict where electric scooters are not allowed to circulate.

R-120: This will be put in place to prevent drivers from accessing certain roads based on their environmental label or other established environmental criteria, the details of which will be specified on the sign.

R-422: Obligation for cyclists to continue on foot. If such obligation is limited to certain periods, it will be indicated on the sign.

Other new road signs

S‐1b: Indicates the beginning of a multi-lane road and, therefore, the place from which the special traffic rules apply to this type of road. This sign may indicate the branch of a junction leading to a multi-lane dual carriageway.

S‐1c: Indicates the beginning of a 2+1 road, that is, one that has three traffic lanes and allows traffic in both directions. The central lane is intended to facilitate overtaking manoeuvres, being alternately reserved for both directions of traffic. This sign can also indicate the branch of a junction that leads to a 2+1 road.
