Three different storms hit Spain this week: Weather forecast January 6-9

The week will be a bit dreary and dark in much of Spain, although temperatures will start to rise

Average temperatures expected on Thursday

The skies opened in many parts of southern Spain last weekend just in time for the Three Kings’ celebrations but thankfully, aside from a few time changes, the festivities went off without a hitch. That’s the good news. The bad news is that this widespread rain is set to continue all this week, although it should be fairly light and showery for the most part.

In fact, as many as three different Atlantic fronts are set to sweep in. But despite this more wintery weather, over the next few days the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) expects the temperatures to rise well above average.

Monday January 6

The passing weather front will leave a predominance of cloudy or overcast skies on Monday and light rain that will move from west to east, reaching the Balearic Islands by the afternoon. The rain is expected to be heavy in Cadiz, and there’s a strong possibility of stormy intervals in other parts of Andalucía later in the day.

Daytime temperatures will take a dip everywhere except for the east coast and Monday night will also be noticeably colder than previous days.

The wind could be blustery in coastal areas, and several communities, including Andalucía and the Region of Murcia, have been placed on alert for dangerous sea conditions.

Tuesday January 7

The weather is expected to clear up a bit on Tuesday, although some low morning cloud cover in the extreme south could lead to foggy conditions. Any rain should be confined to Cantabria, the northeast of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

However, throughout the day the approach of a warm front from the northwest of Spain will cause a gradual increase in cloud cover, leaving a predominance of cloudy or overcast skies in the north and intervals of high clouds in the rest of the country.

Temperatures will tend to fall in most of the southeastern half of the country and the Balearic Islands, with increases in the extreme northwest.

Wednesday January 8

Unstable weather will return on Wednesday thanks to an approaching Atlantic storm, which will result in cloudy or overcast skies and rain in most of the country. However, it’s unlikely that the showers will reach eastern Spain or the Balearic Islands.

Daytime temperatures will rise in most of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, with the mercury soaring into the low 20s in large parts of coastal Andalucía.

Thursday January 9

Things will settle down again on Thursday, but the humidity carried by the Atlantic front means that the skies will still be mostly cloudy. There’s a chance of weak and scattered rain, but this is more likely in mountain areas and around the Strait, and is not expected to affect the east of the country or the Balearic Islands.

Daytime temperatures will continue to climb in most of the Atlantic coast and Mediterranean coasts, with decreases in the Cantabrian Sea, the Pyrenees and inland areas of the southeast.
