Torrential rain and 35 degree temps: Spain weather forecast June 17-20
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The Mediterranean coast of Spain is in for more of the dreaded muddy rain later this week
The month of June has thrown every kind of weather imaginable at us so far, and the coming week will be no exception. After a weekend that finally felt like summer, the forecast for the next few days is another mixed bag of torrential rain, hail storms and scorching temperatures.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), an African subtropical ridge will drop over Spain and this, coupled with a DANA lingering nearby, will lead to a “cold drop” throughout the country later in the week, which could result in very heavy showers and storms before the week is out.
There will also be an influx of suspended dust from North Africa between Wednesday and Thursday and, with showers forecast along the east coast, this could result in more muddy rain.
On Monday June 17 though, the rain should be confined to the north of the country and the mercury will continue to climb in most areas, with a few slight dips in the southeast and the Balearic Islands.
The thermometers could hit 36-38ºC in the provinces of Córdoba and Jaén, and much of the Mediterranean coast will struggle through a stifling tropical night.
The rain will travel from west to east throughout Tuesday June 18, but the showers will be more dispersed and much weaker further south. It will be very hazy in the east of Spain and on the Balearics, where the temperatures will also continue to climb. However, there will be a sharp drop in the west and southwest.
The weather is expected to turn on Wednesday June 19 due to the arrival of a DANA over the west of Spain, which will cause widespread cloudy or overcast skies. Showers and storms could hit any part of the country on Wednesday afternoon, although rain is less likely to stretch to the extreme southeast.
Day-time temperatures will plummet across Spain after hitting the mid to high 30s earlier in the week, more markedly inland and along the eastern coasts.
Thursday the 20th will continue to be cool for the middle of June, with the mercury remaining below 30ºC in every corner of Spain. The east of the country, in particular, will feel a marked drop, and it will be much cooler on both archipelagos.
With a margin of uncertainty, Aemet predicts that the entire country will remain under the influence of a DANA on Thursday, which will leave cloudy skies and widespread rainfall in northern Spain. This could spread to the south in the form of showers, but it’s very unlikely at this point.
