Torrential rain and storms ahead: Andalusia weekly weather forecast Dec 9-15
After a bright and sunny start, Andalucía can expect heavy downpours and overcast skies from mid-week
Weather outlook on Thursday December 12
After a bright if somewhat chilly start to the week, Andalucía is bracing for heavy rain and stormy skies as unsettled weather moves in mid-week.
The Arctic chill that has gripped much of Spain and parts of Andalucía will ease as a powerful storm develops in the Alboran Sea, south of the region. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), this storm is set to bring widespread rainfall, with some areas experiencing intense downpours starting Wednesday.
Tuesday’s forecast
On Monday December 9 and Tuesday December 10, the weather will remain stable: sunny and cold, with morning temperatures dropping to -1°C in Granada, 4°C in Sevilla and 2°C in Córdoba. By midweek, however, the Arctic air mass currently dominating Spain will shift northwards, replaced by a deepening storm system centred in the Gulf of Cádiz.
Wednesday’s forecast
Wednesday December 11 brings the start of Andalucía’s unsettled weather, with mostly cloudy skies and rainfall spreading across the southern and eastern parts of the community. The downpours are expected to intensify from the afternoon, particularly along the Mediterranean coast, where they could become persistent in some areas. Elsewhere, skies will remain partly cloudy with lighter rain.
Thursday December 12 is set to see the full force of a storm system forming over the Alboran Sea, impacting all of Andalucía with widespread rain. Showers are expected across large portions of Spain, with the heaviest and most consistent rainfall concentrated in Mediterranean regions, including the Andalucían coastline and the Strait of Gibraltar. The snowline will hover around 1,400 metres, making higher elevations likely to see snowfall.
Average temperatures on Thursday
Temperatures will edge upwards slightly, though frosty mornings will persist in many inland areas, particularly in the eastern parts and mountainous regions. Strong easterly winds are forecast, with gusty conditions likely in the Mediterranean and coastal areas.
Friday’s forecast
The weekend forecast is hard to predict, but at the moment Aemet believes the most likely scenario involves low-pressure systems drifting southwest toward the Canary Islands. Meanwhile, high pressure will expand across the western Mediterranean, gradually stabilising conditions.
What this means for Andalucía is a great deal of rain on Friday December 13 in the entire community. Coastal areas can still expect heavy downpours on Saturday December 14, but the showers should become lighter and more scattered inland.
Sunday’s forecast
It will begin to dry up on Saturday evening and although Sunday December 15 will be mostly cloudy, it should stay dry for the most part.
