Torrevieja finally tackles La Mata boardwalk after a decade

The pedestrian coastal path in Torrevieja will take a year to complete and cost almost 4 million euros
After more than a decade of demands from Torrevieja residents and complaints from holidaymakers, the City Council has begun replacing the worn pedestrian promenade along La Mata’s waterfront.
Torrevieja’s mayor, councillors for Infrastructure and Beaches and the company responsible for the job, Orthem-Abala, explained the details of the project on Tuesday September 19, which will tackle the wooden walkway between Los Mediterráneos avenue and the salt canal, and on the section located in the Molino del Agua municipal natural park.
The City Council will allocate 3,929,612 euros to replacing the 1,317 linear metres of path. The project should be completed in a year.
The work will be divided up into three sections:
North section between the northern limit of the municipal area and Plaza Encarnación Puchol in the Torrevieja town of La Mata, with a length of 306.25 linear metres.
Central section between the south of Plaza de Encarnación Puchol and Avenida de Los Europeans, which has a length of 658.85 linear metres.
South section located entirely in the Molino del Agua Park, with a length of 352 linear metres.
Over the course of 12 months, contractors will remove all of the old wooden promenade in the north and central sections and replace it with fresh materials, while damaged parts of the southern section, which is in a better state of repair, will be touched up. The entire area will also get new LED lighting.
While the original route of the boardwalk will remain largely the same, the nature of the work means that a few parts will need to be moved slightly.
According to the mayor, the existing path will be renewed with another wood-effect structure that is both durable and removable. The material combines 70% recycled wood products with 30% high-density polyethylene, which contributes to reducing deforestation and CO2 emissions.
One unique action will be the demolition in the southern section of a walkway originally built in printed concrete, which will be replaced by another wooden one of around 120 metres in length to blend in better with the natural park.
The works started on Monday September 18 in the central section of Avenida de Los Mediterráneos and will advance towards La Plaza Encarnación Puchol in the coming days. This route was specifically chosen so as not to disturb the bars and restaurants with outdoor terraces while the weather is still fine.
