Umbrellas at the ready: Spain prepares to go from scorcher to storms this week

We’re all very familiar with the concept of April showers and the idea of May roaring in like a lion only to trot out like a lamb, but come the month of June, we’re used to fairly predictable weather of sunny, hot days and balmy evenings. Sadly, June 2024 didn’t get the memo and we’re headed for a couple of scorching days before the heavens open this coming weekend.

These downpours will come in the form of the dreaded DANA – an Isolated High Level Depression that can cause intense rainstorms, thunderstorms and strong winds that often linger for several days. To make matters worse, the lead-up will be characterised by sweltering temperatures coupled with plenty of suspended dust, which will quickly turn into a muddy deluge once the rains start.

Here’s what to expect from the weather over the next few days:

Wednesday June 5

Temperatures will shoot up in most of Spain on Wednesday, reaching an incredible 36 or even 38ºC in southern provinces like Sevilla and Córdoba. This increase will be noticeable from the very early morning and grow as the hours go by and the clouds begin to dissipate.

Thursday June 6

Things will really begin to heat up on Thursday with the arrival of a warm air mass loaded with suspended dust, especially in the extreme south. Many parts of Spain, such as Extremadura, the northeast and the Mediterranean coast, will experience an uncomfortable tropical dawn, where the night-time temperatures fail to dip below 20ºC.

But the mercury will continue to climb throughout the day, and heat warnings for values upwards of 36ºC have been issued on the banks of the Ebro, Navarra, Zaragoza and Aragon.

And even that is nothing compared to further south, where it’s likely to be 40ºC in the shade in Córdoba.

The weekend

A dramatic cold drop is expected to hit Spain between Friday and Saturday which will drag temperatures down by several degrees.

An Atlantic low will sweep in on June 7, leaving cloudy skies throughout the country and torrential rain in western Spain. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), these stormy intervals could extend to every part of Spain.

On June 8, heavy rain and storms are forecast across the board with the exception of the eastern Mediterranean coast, which should remain dry for the most part. However, temperatures will plummet everywhere, even dipping into the teens in northern Spain.

These intense showers could continue into Sunday June 9 and northerly winds will serve to bring the mercury down even further. As the DANA passes by late on Monday June 10, a period of stability should follow in much of Spain. However, there’s a possibility that a new front could descend from the Atlantic, which would prolong the storms in northern Spain.
