ARCHIVED - Until 15 October The 9th Lorca Ancient Music Festival
A series of seven concerts at atmospheric venues to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the birth of King Alfonso X
The 9th annual “Festival de Música Antigua de Lorca” is being held in the city from October 6 to October 15, featuring a series of seven concerts, all at different historic and atmospheric venues, with an admission charge of just 3 euros.
This year’s festival aims not only to promote the charms of ancient music and the sights of the historic city centre of Lorca, but also to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the birth of King Alfonso X “El Sabio”, who was instrumental in ending Moorish rule over Lorca and the rest of Murcia in the 13th century.
The program for the 2022 Lorca Ancient Music Festival is as follows:
Thursday October 6
The trio Iluni Música perform “De amores divinos y humanos”, a collection of pieces from the 17th and 18th centuries, at 20.30 in the Former Collegiate Church of San Patricio.
Friday October 7
More 17th- and 18th-century music from “De Versalles a Sanssouci”, a duo comprising baroque flute and harpsichord played by José Fernández Vera and Andrés Alberto Gómez Rueda. The concert begins at 20.30 in the Iglesia de San Francisco.
Saturday October 8
The all-female group “DeMusica Ensemble” offer a concert at 20.30 in the sanctuary of the Virgen de las Huertas. “Ellas en Bizancio” consists of music from the 7th to the 15th century and is directed by María Ángeles Zapata.
Thursday October 13
Soprano Kymiyo Nakako and guitarist Manuel Sánchez perform “Tonos y Ayres” in the chapel of Rosario-Santo Domingo.
Friday October 14
A concert for secondary school students at 11.00 in the the Escuela Municipal de Música featuring instruments similar to those which would have been used in the times of King Alfonso X.
At 20.30 the church of the Convento de las Clarisas hosts the Ensemble Alfonsí performing “Instrumentos para Loar a Santa María”, another event commemorating Alfonso X.
Saturday October 15
The setting is the old synagogue in Lorca castle for the final concert of the festival at 20.30, featuring the group Anónimo IV-Ensemble Medieval y Renacentista as they perform “Música en torno a Alfonso X ‘El Sabio’”. The concert is followed by snacks.
Tickets for all concerts should be reserved by telephone on 968 462998 or 626 369437, the price being 3 euros per person per event. Reservations can also be made at the Escuela Municipal de Música de Lorca.

Oficina de Turismo de Lorca
The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites, and historic buildings, around which the modern City has built its tourism industry. Amongst these are Lorca Castle, the Jewish Quarter of the castle and Synagogue, Plaza de España, Colegiata de San Patricio, Museo de Arqueologico Municipal, Iglesia de San Francisco, Casa Huerto Ruano, Palacio de Guevara, Iglesia de San Mateo, Pósito de los Panaderos, Convento Virgen de las Huertas, Antiguo Convento de la Merced, Iglesia del Carmen and the Teatro Guerra.
Unfortunately Lorca has also been prone to natural disaster, suffering a Gota Fría on September 28th 2012, as well as an earthquake which measured 5.3 on the Richter scale on 11th May 2011 and claimed 9 lives. Since this earthquake the city has been rebuilding, winning recognition for its Lorca, Open for Restoration initiative, which used the restoration of the city as a tourist attraction whilst it rebuilt its historical buildings, some of which are currently still not open.
The tourist office itself has temporarily relocated until the renovations are completed and is on Calle San Patricio near the church.
Lorca also has an area of coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, in the Sierra de Almenara, which includes the beaches of, Puntas de Calnegre, Baño de las Mujeres, San Pedro, El Siscal, Cala Honda, Cuartel del Ciscar, Junquera, Cala de la Gruta, Cala Leña, Los Hierros, Cala Blanca and Playa Larga, although many are accessible only through agricultural exploitations.
However, in spite of its many attractions, the name of Lorca is synonymous with Easter, (Semana Santa) its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status and famous throughout Spain. The week includes a series of parades in which the whites (Paso Blanco) and blues (Paso Azúl) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.
Lorca also has a Parador hotel, located within the complex of its historic castle.
Opening hours for Lorca Tourist Office:
- Monday to Friday: 10.00 to 14.00 and 16.30 to 19.00.
- Saturday: 10.00 to 14.00 and 16.30 to 18.30.
- Sunday: 10.00 to 14.00.
