Music, festive events, Father Christmas, fairground attractions and the Three Kings come to Lorca over the Christmas holidays

The Christmas lights are now on and the decorations are up in the city of Lorca, the season of events in the Plaza de España has begun and a host of activities are scheduled over the coming weeks at the impressive castle, and the Town Hall has published the official program of events and activities over the Christmas, New Year and Three Kings holidays.

Wednesday December 18

17.30: Opening of the children’s funfair in the Plaza de Calderón de la Barca, all rides 1.50 euros.

Thursday December 19

17.30: Opening of the children’s funfair in the Plaza de Calderón de la Barca.

Friday December 20

17.30: Opening of the children’s funfair in the Plaza de Calderón de la Barca.

18.30: The “Cabalgata de la Ilusión”, Father Christmas is the main attraction in a parade from the Óvalo de Santa Paula to the grotto at the Palacete de Huerto Ruano.

19.30: Official opening of Santa’s grotto at the Palacete de Huerto Ruano.

Saturday December 21

12.00 and 17.30: Opening of the children’s funfair in the Plaza de Calderón de la Barca.

17.00: Father Christmas opens his door to visitors at his house next to the Palacete de Huerto Ruano.

17.00 and 21.00: Carmen Franco performs at the Auditorio Margarita Lozano.

17.00: Christmas music from the Grupo de Coros y Danzas de Lorca, first at the Residencia de San Diego and then in the church of San Francisco at 18.00 and the Capilla del Rosario (19.30).

18.00 to 22.00: Music from DJ Diego Cano and Koni Deejay in the Plaza de España.

19.30: Flamenco zambomba with José Méndez in Calle Corredera.

Sunday December 22

10.00: Official opening of the nativity scene at the convent church of Santa Ana and Santa María Magdalena de Las Clarisas, preceded by Mass and accompanied by music from the Cuadrilla de los Auroros de Lorca.

12.00 and 17.30: Opening of the children’s funfair in the Plaza de Calderón de la Barca.

12.00: Music at the 43^rd annual Encuentro de Cuadrillas de Pascua de Lorca in Calle Corredera.

Sunday January 5

11.30: The Three Kings visit the Casa de Guevara and the municipal nativity scene before heading for the Plaza de España to be greeted by the children of the city.

12.00 and 17.30: Opening of the children’s funfair in the Plaza de Calderón de la Barca.

18.00: The Three Kings Parade in the city centre. Route: San José, Calle Pérez Casas, Calle Nogalte, Calle Cuesta de San Francisco, Calle Príncipe Alfonso, Calle Santa Paula, Plaza del Óvalo, Avenida Juan Carlos I. During the parade the Kings themselves leave the procession to go to the Plaza de España along Calle Musso Valiente and Calle Álamo, where they say farewell to the children.

Monday January 6

11.00: The traditional performance of the Auto de los Reyes Magos in the village of Zarzadilla de Totana.

The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites, and historic buildings, around which the modern City has built its tourism industry. Amongst these are Lorca Castle, the Jewish Quarter of the castle and Synagogue, Plaza de España, Colegiata de San Patricio, Museo de Arqueologico Municipal, Iglesia de San Francisco, Casa Huerto Ruano, Palacio de Guevara, Iglesia de San Mateo, Pósito de los Panaderos, Convento Virgen de las Huertas, Antiguo Convento de la Merced, Iglesia del Carmen and the Teatro Guerra.  

Unfortunately Lorca has also been prone to natural disaster, suffering a Gota Fría on September 28th 2012, as well as an earthquake which measured 5.3 on the Richter scale on 11th May 2011 and claimed 9 lives. Since this earthquake the city has been rebuilding, winning recognition for its Lorca, Open for Restoration initiative, which used the restoration of the city as a tourist attraction whilst it rebuilt its historical buildings, some of which are currently still not open.

The tourist office itself has temporarily relocated until the renovations are completed and is on Calle San Patricio near the church.

Lorca also has an area of coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, in the Sierra de Almenara, which includes the beaches of, Puntas de Calnegre, Baño de las Mujeres, San Pedro, El Siscal, Cala Honda, Cuartel del Ciscar, Junquera, Cala de la Gruta, Cala Leña, Los Hierros, Cala Blanca and Playa Larga, although many are accessible only through agricultural exploitations.

However, in spite of its many attractions, the name of Lorca is synonymous with Easter, (Semana Santa) its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status and famous throughout Spain. The week includes a series of parades in which the whites (Paso Blanco) and blues (Paso Azúl) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.

Lorca also has a Parador hotel, located within the complex of its historic castle.
