ARCHIVED - Valencia Covid update September 20: Incidence rate falls below 60
ARCHIVED ARTICLE 521 new cases and five deaths reported in the region over the weekend, with half detected in Alicante province
Whilst there has been an increase in the number of new Covid diagnoses in the Valencia region – up from 345 prior to the weekend to 521 reported today – the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has fallen to 58.32 cases per 100,000 people.
The region has the second lowest incidence rate in Spain, behind Asturias (21.89), below the national average of 83.43 and that of Andalucia (72.24) and the neighbouring Region of Murcia (92.77).
New cases
A further 521 Covid cases have been reported since Friday September 17 in the Valencia region, bringing the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 508,079. By province: 66 in Castellón (52,710 in total); 251 in Alicante (186,154 in total) and 204 in Valencia (269,213 in total). There are still two unassigned cases.
Recoveries
718 people recovered from Covid, meaning that to date, 508,733 people in the Valencian region have overcome the virus. By province 53,043 in Castellón; 185,620 in Alicante; and 270,013 in Valencia. There are 57 unassigned discharges.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 231 people admitted to hospitals in the three provinces, up from 222 reported in the last update, 58 of whom are being treated in ICUs: 37 in the province of Castellón, eight in ICU; 9105 in the province of Alicante, 26 in ICU; and 89 in the province of Valencia, 24 of them in ICU.
Fatalities
There have been five deaths – two in the last seven days, and three which occurred in August – two less than were reported on Thursday, meaning the total now stands at 7,760 since the start of the pandemic: 841 of these fatalities have been recorded in Castellón, 2,971 in Alicante and 3,948 in the province of Valencia.
Vaccinations
A total of 4,036,048 people have now received one dose of vaccine, and 3,875,422 people are fully immunised with two doses of Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca, or the single-dose Janssen.
Some 25,736 people have been vaccinated without an appointment in the first two weeks in which the Valencian Community has combined the ‘open vaccination’ with the scheduled campaign. About 26,000 people have been vaccinated without an appointment in the Valencian Community in the last two weeks.
In the first week of free vaccination, 12,881 doses were administered without an appointment, of which 7,812 were first doses and 5,069 second doses, according to Ministry of Health.
In the second week, a further 12,855 jabs were given, 6,829 of them initial doses and 6,026 second vaccines.
“We are getting closer to the end every day, but we need to continue insisting on the importance of the vaccine,” said Health Minister, Ana Barcelo.
With much of the population aged over 12 now vaccinated, the president of the Valencia government, Ximo Puig, has revealed the regional authority is considering the requirement of vaccination certificates to gain entry to bars, nightclubs, restaurants and other establishments.
Active cases
According to the latest data, there are currently 3,038 active cases in the community, which represents 0.58% of the total positives.
Outbreaks
Since the last update, there have been no outbreaks with 10 or more associated cases reported.
