The initiative was launched on the Costa Blanca during the pandemic to boost employment and local tourism
The Valencia region's 'Bono viaje' travel voucher scheme to promote staycations launched during the Covid crisis to alleviate the impact of the pandemic has been extended indefinitely.
The initiative offer discounts of 50% and up to 400 euros for stays in the Valencia region of between two and four nights, and 60%, or up to 600 euros for stays of five nights or more.
"The travel voucher is a very positive tool to keep the sector active. During the pandemic inland tourism has grown considerably and now we must transform these figures into something lasting and sustainable," explained the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Francesc Colomer.
During the first three months of Bono-Viaje 2022, 71,629 users had already signed up to the scheme and 30,500 vouchers have been issued, "a figure that is increasing every fortnight", according to the tourist board.
In 2021, there were around 40,000 subsidised bookings involving 1,539 tourism companies following a regional government investment of 15 million euros. A similar amount has been allocated for the 2022 scheme.
"This scheme is undoubtedly positive, and a stimulus for the recovery of the sector and the seasonal nature of tourism that must be maintained," said Valencia president, Ximo Puig, adding: "The tourism sector has faced the pandemic with enormous strength and resilience, despite the enormous difficulties caused by the health crisis. Bono viaje 2022 will help not only the economic recovery, but also emotional recovery."
More than 100,000 people are expected to benefit from the initiative this year, with more than 1,000 travel agencies, hotels, tourist apartments and complexes, campsites, rural accommodation and companies managing tourist accommodation participating.
"This programme has definitely helped to boost tourism in the region during the first quarter of the year, and particularly during the Easter holidays with 4,500 bookings," added the tourist board.
The most popular destinations include: Benidorm, Calpe, Altea, Alicante, Finestrat, Denia, Elche, Valencia.
Vacations must be booked within 10 calendar days of receiving the voucher, and only one voucher per person can be applied for via the regional government's website.
