Animal associations in Alicante province have collected 3,500 kilos of vital aid for pets caught up in the conflict

Almost 40 animal associations in Alicante are collaborating in a campaign to provide vital medical aid to pets affected by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and on Tuesday morning, March 22, waved off a van loaded with supplies destined for the Polish border.

In just a week, 3,500 kilos of medical provisions have been collected at multiple points in the province and the donations together with three volunteers have now set off from El Campello to begin the 6,000 kilometre round-trip.

Animal Aid Project Ukraine is promoted by the association Huellas en la Montaña de El Campello, Aigües and Busot, and has a Facebook profile with regular update posts.

Association member Vanesa Miño, who is one of the three volunteers making the long humanitarian journey, said on Monday that "the response in just a week from people, businesses, vets, individuals, associations.....has been spectacular",

"I have a big van and I thought we had to do something, so we started this campaign. We are 38 associations in total and are still collecting things. We are taking sanitary materials and medical fodder and in contact with Polish veterinarians who will take the supplies to Ukraine," added Miño.

The association has stressed that "now it's up to us to get our strength and claws out".

"Many families will be devastated, not only are they lost, not knowing what their fate will be, but also imagine leaving your home behind, with a small bag and your family, destination... to who knows... Well, many of these families have furry animals, and not even a war will separate the love that unites them.

"It is horrible what is happening, and as animal welfare associations we have to do something, and of course we ask for your help. We know that with everyone's solidarity we are going to achieve a lot. Today, they are the ones in need, any other day... it could be us," reads a post from the association.

The volunteers have also stressed that the mission is to deliver supplies, not to bring pets to the province, due in part to the health controls and diseases that must be taken into account.

"Also, there are many animals here that need homes," Miño pointed out, although "the door is open to bring some animals from Ukrainie" to be reunited with their owners who were forced to leave them behind when they fled the besieged country.

Donations can still be dropped at the EU de El Campello facilities. Items most needed include: betadine, chlorhexidine, bandages, syringes and needles (pink, blue, yellow and orange), large animal cages, physiological saline solution, 5% glucose saline solution, gauze and tape, healing creams, (llastoestimulin, terramycin), silver nitrate wound spray, dog/cat milk, probiotics, muzzles of all sizes, leashes, harnesses, collars, carriers, medicated feed and wet food, natural unpasteurised honey, cough syrup for dogs and animal analgesics.
