Warmer but still wet: Spain weather forecast January 2-5

The weekend ahead will be much milder in most of Spain as the cold front retreats

Average temperatures expected on Saturday

The new year got off to a very damp start in much of southern Spain and the Balearic Islands, with storm alerts dominating the Mediterranean coast on December 31 and January 1. In some towns in the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia, more than 50 litres per square metre of rain fell but thankfully, only a few minor, isolated incidents were reported.

Interestingly, the worst of the weather hit many areas that have been parched throughout 2024, and this provided a much-needed boost to reservoirs.

The weekend ahead will bring us some more mixed weather as the cold drop recedes, being replaced by a warmer air mass that will hike up the temperatures. On the other hand, several storm fronts will approach at once, spreading rain to a good part of the north and the Atlantic slope throughout the weekend. However, the wind will shift to the west-southwest so on the whole, it should be much milder than earlier in the week.

Thursday January 2

Dense and persistent freezing fog will continue to cause issues in parts of the country, and Aragon, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Navarra, the Basque country and La Rioja have all been issued yellow warnings.

The chance of rain and showers in the south-east and the Balearic Islands will gradually decrease during the day as the low-pressure system moves away and stable weather will predominate in most of Spain. An approaching Atlantic front will result in some overcast skies and light rain in the extreme north-west.

Day-time temperatures should start to climb, hitting a pleasant 19ºC in Alicante and Malaga.

Friday January 3

The fog warnings have all been lifted for Friday and only Galicia remains on alert for heavy rain and dangerous sea conditions.

The approach of a storm and the arrival of several Atlantic fronts will leave cloudy or overcast skies across northern Spain but the rest of the country should avoid the rain, although it will be a rather cloudy day overall.

Thermometers will continue to inch upwards in the Mediterranean area with few temperature changes expected on Friday night.

Saturday January 4

As we head into the first weekend of the new year, a storm is expected to pass through the north of Spain, leaving cloudy or overcast skies in the northern half and the Atlantic coast.

The east and south can expect mostly clear or slightly cloudy skies with no rain.

Maximum temperatures will increase in the north of Spain and in the mountain ranges of the southeast, while no changes are expected in the rest of the country. Minimum temperatures will increase almost universally.

Sunday January 5

More changes are afoot on Sunday thanks to a storm located to the north. Cloudy skies and sometimes heavy rain are expected to spread from the northwest towards the east, although no rain is forecast in the Mediterranean area or the Balearic Islands. It will, however, be very overcast, and the Atlantic coast can expect some showers.

Daytime temperatures will rise again in much of the south, reaching 21ºC in Sevilla.
