Legend has it that the famous animator emigrated from Andalucia to the US as a child
The Almeria town of Mojácar might be more well-known for its pristine Mediterranean beaches and historic whitewashed Moorish buildings, but the town council is embracing another claim to fame: the “possible link” of the world-renowned film director and animator, Walt Disney, with the municipality.
According to long-standing local legend, Disney was the illegitimate son of an Andalucia-born washerwoman and doctor, and immigrated to the United States when he was just a child.
In honour of this treasured tradition, the Ayuntamiento de Mojácar plans to launch several initiatives in collaboration with the ‘Walt Was Here Association’ to cement the celebrity’s connections with the area.
In fact, the project has already begun with an impressive mural on the front of the Bartolomé Flores public school, complete with a QR code that tells, in four different languages, “the entire journey made by this illustrious character and his mother, to emigrate from the locality to the United States.”
The commemorative painting is the work of renowned graffiti artists Danklabara and Nauni. Nauni is currently one of the most sought-after artists in Spain and has already been commissioned to complete more than 1,500 public works.
The council also has plans to rename the central plaza ‘Walt Disney Square’ and fill the square and surrounding streets with decorations dedicated to the legendary figure. In the future, these will become part of an official tour, full of “surprises and motifs” for movie buffs of all ages.
The recently formed ‘Walt Was Here Association’ has worked tirelessly to gather “all the traces and clues that have been produced over the years and that reveal the possible Mojaquero origin of Walt Disney... from documents existing in the Town Council itself in the last 35 years, from compilations of the Spanish and American media, going through private or official reports, as well as their own inquiries about everything that leads them to the definitive and indisputable about his place of birth,” explained the Council.
