Weekly visits to the Hornillo railway jetty in Aguilas brought forward to Friday August 4

The change has been made in order to avoid coinciding with the Summer Carnival of Águilas

The free weekly visits to the iconic Hornillo railway loading and unloaidng jetty in Águilas, which have been taking place on Saturdays since the structure reopened to visitors in June after remaining closed for half a century, have beeen brought forward this week to Friday August 4 so as not to coincide with the Summer Carnival celebrations in the town. 

Visits to the restored section of the jetty are being held from 19.00 to 21.00 and reservations should be made, as always, through the tourist office (open on weekdays 9.30 to 14.00 and 17.00 to 21.00, telephone 968 493285. The 30-minute visits are without a guide but booking is required in order to avoid exceeding the maximum capacity of 30 people at any one time. 

When The emblematic Embarcadero del Hornillo received its first visitors for many years in June it was a long-awaited event in Águilas and given the restoration effort which made this possible it was no surprise to see local dignitaries among the first to see what is at the same time the newest and one of the oldest tourist attractions in Águilas!

As a result of this project it is now possible to walk on the jetty for the first time since 1973, and as of Saturday August 11 the visits will take place every Saturday until the end of the month between 19.00 to 21.00.

The jetty was built under the supervision of engineer Gustavo Gillman in 1903 and is considered to be one of the two most important of its kind still standing in Spain. The first phase of its restoration cost a million euros (75 per cent of which came from national government funds and the rest from the Town Hall) and the local council is now applying for a further 3 million euros of funding to restore historic buildings in the municipality, part of this being earmarked for the completion of the rehabilitation of the Embarcadero de Hornillo.

Águilas boasts 28 kilometres of coastline, with many fine, sandy beaches, sheltered coves and unspoilt natural beaches. Throughout the year the tourist office runs monthly guided tours and the route of the railways, which explores the railway history of the town.

The tourist information office is located in the Plaza de Antonio Cortijos, just a short walk from the sea front and Plaza de España, a cool, shaded space in which to enjoy a coffee.
