Wet and windy: Spain weather forecast September 16-19
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
A retrograde DANA will result in widespread rain in much of Spain this week
Weather alerts on Tuesday
September is always a pretty unpredictable month in Spain weather-wise and it’s certainly living up to its reputation this year. Early last week, much of the country experienced sudden downpours and even hail showers, before a much more settled weekend when the sun made reappearance.
In the days ahead, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has predicted that a powerful anticyclonic block will bring lots of rain to this country, particularly the Mediterranean coast. In addition, a retrograde DANA, which moves from east to west, contrary to its usual flow, will result in a wet and windy week for much of the country.
Monday September 16
Yellow alerts for rough seas have been activated in the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Galicia as a result of very strong gusts of wind, but elsewhere the weather is expected to be mostly settled. The skies will be a little cloudy in most places but it should remain dry, with the exception of the Strait of Gibraltar, where storms are expected at the end of the day.
Maximum temperatures will tend to fall inland but the mercury will creep up in the north and south-east.
Tuesday September 17
A low pressure system will approach the eastern Mediterranean area on Tuesday, increasing cloudiness from the northeast to the southwest, with possible scattered showers and some storms. Rainfall is most likely in Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the mountains of the southeast.
Daytime temperatures will fall across the board, failing to reach 30ºC in most parts.
The Valencian Community, Andalucía, the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Galicia have all been issued with yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and/or stormy intervals.
Wednesday September 18
The unstable weather will spread to most of eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands on Wednesday. Here, it will be very overcast with a good chance of showers and storms, which will be more intense further north. However, the rain will be persistent throughout the day in the east of Andalucía and Valencia as well.
Despite the rain, maximum temperatures should increase in the northwest of Spain but the temperatures will drop elsewhere.
Yellow weather alerts for heavy rain have been activated in Catalonia and the Valencian Community.
Thursday September 19
Another damp and dreary day is forecast for most of the east on Thursday, with the rains likely to extend to inland Spain and the Balearic Islands by the afternoon. It will be mostly overcast with a chance of showers everywhere.
It promises to be a very muggy day with temperatures rising both during the day and at night, particularly in northern Spain.
No weather warnings have been issued for Thursday.
