Shopping in Almería city – commercial centres, markets and areas for ‘compras’
Almería city in Andalucía has several things for tourists to do and try, including those who step off the cruise ships for a day trip. If a shopping holiday is on your list of things to do while you’re in Almería, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Here are the places where you can buy food, clothing and homeware items in Almería:
Shopping malls
There are two major shopping centres in Almería city – Centro Comercial Mediterráneo and the Centro Comercial Torrecárdenas.
The Mediterráneo shopping centre is located on Avenida Mediterráneo and boasts a Pepco, C&A, an Alcampo supermarket and many other fashion boutiques, as well as a cinema and a food court.
The Torrecárdenas shopping centre is located a little further north, just 5 minutes from the Mediterráneo mall, and it is slightly bigger. It also has a cinema and a food court with fast food outlets, plus a Mercadona supermarket and a Primark.
Supermarkets
As well as the supermarkets located in the city’s shopping centres, there are several Carrefour, Mercadona and Consum supermarkets located on the city’s major thoroughfares. You can also easily find smaller local food shopping premises, such as Carrefour Express and independent corner shops.
The main shopping streets in Almería
Most of the clothes shops, phone shops and assorted shopping establishments in Almería city centre are located on the Paseo de Almería, which runs from north to south through the city, almost parallel with the Rambla, the Avenida de Federico García Lorca. Many other high-end fashion stores are squeezed into the smaller streets criss-crossing between these two major arteries.
IKEA
A fairly new IKEA opened at the top of Almería’s Rambla, near the entrance to the city from the AP-7 motorway coming from Murcia.
It sells the usual clean-cut range of home furnishings and furniture that make the brand so popular, and anything they don’t have in store can be ordered to collect.
Weekly markets in Almería capital
The main shopping attraction in the city centre is the Mercado Central, the Central Market (pictured, above), which sells a mouthwatering selection of fresh fish, meat, seafood, fruit and vegetables on a daily basis for a very competitive price. Most of the fruit and veg is locally grown in Almería’s famous greenhouses (the province of Almería, along with its neighbour Murcia, produces much of Spain’s fresh produce), and is remarkably tasty in comparison with produce bought elsewhere in the country that has had to travel a long way.
Other semi-regular shopping attractions include the small flea market selling cheap bric-a-brac and secondhand books, which is held around once a month down near the seafront at the beginning of the beach, in front of the skate park. Slightly further out of town along the N-344 road towards El Toyo, you can find the Sunday morning car boot sale market ‘El Alquián’, which is held weekly from around 10am until 2pm.
