A DANA will bring torrential downpours and storms to large parts of northern Spain in the coming days

Widespread rain in parts this weekend: Spain weather forecast June 27-30

Over the last couple of days, a new DANA has been approaching Spain and on Tuesday afternoon it left behind the first strong storms in the northwest and centre of the country. One of the most intense fell in Madrid, where a wet outburst left gusts of 62 km/h and accumulated rainfall of 22.2 mm.

The DANA will continue to advance until it reaches the Gulf of Cádiz on Thursday June 27 and will cross Spain towards the northeast between Friday June 28 and Saturday 29, leaving an episode of showers and strong storms in many areas of the country along with a severe drop in temperature.

Once the weather front drops in southern Spain in the wee hours of Thursday June 27, heavy morning showers are a distinct possibility in all of central Andalucía, Extremadura and western Castilla-La Mancha. This rain could well spread to other parts of inland Spain and the northwest in the afternoon, and the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has placed areas such as Galicia and Castilla y León on alert for storms.

The rain is unlikely to impact the southeast of Spain too much but temperatures will vary widely, hovering between the high 20s and 30s across the board.

Friday June 28 is expected to be the most unstable day of the entire episode and the rain will be heaviest in western Andalucía, Extremadura, western Castilla-La Mancha and southern Castilla y León, especially in the morning.

With the advance of the DANA, these downpours will extend to a large part of the interior of the country, with particularly violent storms forecast once again in Galicia, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha. They will even reach down as far as the Region of Murcia, and although they will continue in Extremadura and Andalucía they will lose intensity as the hours go by.

The thermometers could creep up by a degree or two along the Mediterranean coast but there will be a sharp drop everywhere else.

Although the uncertainty is higher for Saturday June 29, it appears that the DANA will continue to move northeastward where it will be reabsorbed into the atmosphere, so the worst of the showers and storms should be confined to the north and northeast.

Daytime temperatures will tend to recover in the southern and southeastern parts on Saturday afternoon, possible exceeding 34ºC in Valencia.

On Sunday June 30, with the entry of a new high-altitude weather front, showers could make a reappearance in the northern half of Spain, but they’ll be generally weak and more scattered compared to previous days.

Sunday evening will be much warmer in the southeast of Spain but while daytime temperatures should climb along the Atlantic slope, they’ll take another noticeable dip in most other parts.
