Works by Mozart and Beethoven at the main auditorium in Murcia
The fourth event in the 2019-20 “Promúsica” cycle at the Auditorio Víctor Villegas in the city of Murcia is a performance by the musicians of the Cuarteto Brentano.
On the programme are Mozart’s quartet nº 18, K464, and two quartets by Beethoven, Op.18. No.5 and Op.127.
Interestingly, the Brentano Quartet are renowned for their performances of string quartets by Beethoven, having contributed the soundtrack to the 2012 film A Late Quartet, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken, Catherine Keener, Mark Ivanir and Imogen Poots. In fact, in the final scene of the film Walken is replaced by cellist Nina Lee after his character’s Parkinson’s worsens.
The Cuarteto Brentano Quartet was founded in 1992 and is named after Antonie Brentano, believed to be Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved” to whom the Diabelli Variations were dedicated along with his last two piano sonatas. In 1998 Lee replaced founder member Michael Kannen.
The program on 13th January does not include the string quartet nº 14 which plays such an important role in A Last Quartet, although Opus 18 is an interesting work since it is based on the piece by Mozart included in this concert and Opus 127 is the first of a series of works written in 1825 and 1826 which were Beethoven’s last quartets.
The performance on 13th January begins at 20.00 with admission priced at 20 euros for those not in possession of season tickets for all 10 events in the cycle. These season tickets cost 198 euros (or 60 euros for under 25s) and can be purchased here: holders of the Pro Música season ticket are also entitled to 50 per cent discounts for events forming part of the 2019-2002 “grandes conciertos” and “OSRM” cycles at the auditorium.
