509 new infections recorded in Alicante and the rest of the Valencia region since Friday October 15
New Covid cases have risen by 70% over the weekend with the Ministry of Health reporting 509 infections since Friday, but president, Ximo Puig, insists the region "is not on the verge of a sixth wave" thanks expecially to "the great shield of vaccines".
"At the moment there is no reason to talk of a sixth wave," he said, whilst reminding that "the pandemic cannot be taken for granted" and once again calling for prudence.
A further 509 new cases have been reported over the weekend, up significantly from 180 on Friday October 15, bringing the total number of positives since the beginning of the pandemic to 512,490. By province: 155 in Castellón (53,616 in total); 191 in Alicante (188,051) and 163 in Valencia (270,822).
Recoveries
320 people have recovered from Covid since the last update, meaning that to date, 514,285 people in the Valencian region have overcome the virus. By province: 53,907 in Castellón; 188,049 in Alicante; and 272,273 in Valencia.
Hospitalisations
There are currently 175 people admitted to hospitals in the three provinces, up from 143 on Monday, 45 of whom are being treated in ICUs (four more than on Friday): 47 in the province of Castellón, five in ICU; 73 in the province of Alicante, 29 in ICU; and 55 in the province of Valencia, 11 of them in ICU.
Fatalities
There has been one reported death which occurred in the last seven days. The Ministry of Health has only confirmed the victim was 80-years-old and that they died in Alicante. The fatality means the total now stands at 7,820 since the start of the pandemic: 849 of these deaths have been recorded in Castellón; 2,999 in Alicante; and 3,972 in the province of Valencia.
Vaccinations
There has been no update in terms of vaccinations, but as of Friday, a total of 4,063,247 people had received one dose of vaccine, and 4,015,929 people ewere fully immunised with two doses of Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca, or the single-dose Janssen.
Active cases
According to the latest data, there are currently 1,836 active cases in the community, which represents 0.35% of the total positives.
Outbreaks
Since the last update, there have been two outbreaks with 10 or more associated cases: Ayora – 18 cases of social origin; and San Antonio de Benagéber – 11 cases within an educational environment.
