ARCHIVED - 8,148 new covid cases in the last 24 hours; virus accelerates in Spain. 21st August
The total number of new cases in the last week is 43,241, or 6,177 a DAY
The number of covid cases reported in Spain has continued to accelerate and on Friday afternoon the Ministry of Health increased the total number of cases published from the 377,906 total of Thursday to 386,054, a difference of 8,148 cases.
Although the official number of cases diagnosed within the last 24 hours was 3,650, the actual increase in cases is swollen by the number of cases verified by the health ministry from the totals reported daily from the 17 autonomous regions of Spain, which each produce their own figures daily. There is generally a mismatch between the figures reported officially in the graph below and the figures published daily by the autonomous regions themselves, but as the cases are verified, they are included in the overall total without the totals formerly published being updated, so there is always a “catch-up” process underway.
Comparing the figure from last Friday which was 342,813 to that of this Friday, the total number of new cases in the last week is 43,241, or 6,177 a DAY, a significant rise on the total of the previous week which was 28,451.
The total number of deaths given today is 25, bringing the total to date to 28,838.
Although the number of cases is worrying in its own right, the figure which is causing the most concern is the rise in the number of patients requiring hospital treatment, which has gone up to 4,703 nationwide, and 541 in intensive care units.
These are the patients which obviously require the most resource and attention, as many of them require ventilation and close care from staff, as their every need must be accommodated due to many of them being sedated; this requires constant work from physiotherapists to ensure that the body continues to function without muscle wastage, cleaning and medical care.
The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), has reported that the 'stock' available at this time in Spain of Remdesivir, the only authorized antiviral medicine against COVID-19, "is going to run out in the next few hours "due to the" increase in the number of cases. "
There are outbreaks all over the country, but this week the situation in both Madrid and Catalonia is becomingly increasingly worrying.
Today the Madrid Deputy Minister of Public Health, Antonio Zapatero, has recommended that the inhabitants of the region "stay at home" in the areas most affected by the region's pandemic and the increasingly tense political situation in the region was exacerbated by a court ruling which effectively overturned the restrictions ordered by the Madrid Government to try and limit the spread of the virus, banning smoking in public places, eating on public transport, closure of nocturnal leisure etc. The judge said that the only mechanism by which this could be enforced was the state of emergency, which can only be declared by the national Government. This is contrary to the posture being adopted in other regions, highlighting the complicated situation related to the legislation of civil rights in Spain, particularly regarding the restrictions required to manage the Covid virus.
Madrid continues to be the region of Spain with the highest number of new cases; the official totals by the Spanish Health Ministry report 1199, but the Madrid reginal government itself reports twelve deaths and 1,004 infections, to which another 2,878 PCR positives dating from previous days must be added, which have now been incorporated into the count .
In total, since the start of the pandemic the Community of Madrid has reported 9,332 deaths in hospitals with coronavirus and 106,215 positives.
Madrid is followed by the Basque Country which officially reported 685 cases. The Basque Minister of Health, Nekane Murga, said today that the Basque Country is in "the second wave" of the coronavirus pandemic, with an upward trend, and has urged residents to prevent children from interacting with each other in public spaces, such as swimming pools, parks, beaches and squares to minimise the spread of the virus amongst young people ahead of the return to school. In this way," small bubbles of coexistence to preserve health and prevent the spread of covid," can be created, and the health service is launching a campaign to try and persuade families to understand the importance of observing social distancing and limiting close contacts, “You are the vaccine!” it says.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has ended his holiday and has flown back to Madrid this afternoon , although his press office denies that he has cut short his vacation and had always planned to return on a Friday afternoon.
