In the past 24 hours alone, the health authorities registered 1,244 new cases of the virus, 12 more than the previous day and more than double the figure recorded on Sunday December 12 (541).
New cases
Of the 1,244 new cases registered on Thursday December 16, 442 were in the municipality of Murcia, 211 were in Cartagena, 49 were in Molina de Segura, 48 were in Jumilla, 43 were in Totana, 35 were in Lorca, 33 were in Yecla, 31 were in Alcantarilla, 25 were in Las Torres de Cotillas, 23 were in Águilas, 23 were in Caravaca de la Cruz, 21 were in San Javier and the remaining municipalities all registered 20 or fewer cases.
Active cases
This is another Covid statistic which is increasing at an incredibly rapid rate, rising from 1,439 (November 18) to 7,786 in just one month. Compared to the previous update from December 15, when there were 6,701 active cases, this represents a worrying increase of over 1,000 in 24 hours.
Fatalities
Three more deaths in the Region bring the total death toll up to 1,787. The people who sadly lost their lives were two men and one woman, aged 80, 87 and 88, from the health areas VII (East Murcia) and VI (Vega Media del Segura).
Hospitalisations
Of the 7,786 active cases, 7,563 are in self-isolation at home and 223 are in the Region’s hospitals: 12 more in the past day. Occupancy in intensive care units is also on the rise with Covid patients now occupying 43 beds.
Incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate has risen by over almost 300 points since last Friday December 10 and the figure now stands at 617.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Meanwhile, the 7-day rate is also rapidly increasing and now stands at 435.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, meaning that the rapidly increasing cases show no sign of slowing down.
The national government have recently authorised booster jabs for over 40s in Spain and the whole country in ploughing ahead with the vaccination of children. So far, the Region of Murcia has administered at least one dose to 90.97% of the population while 85.76% have been double-jabbed.
