World Book Day was created by UNESCO on April 23, 1995 as an international celebration of books and reading
World Book Day, held every year on April 23, has become an essential fixture in communities and schools since it was first created by UNESCO in 1995. And in Orihuela, a weekend of street theatre, Shakespeare readings in English and an exhibition have been put together to mark the event.
From Friday April 21, an exhibition entitled 'Temples of Wisdom' will be on display in Episcopal Palace's open courtyard. Organised by Orihuela's Department of Culture and the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art, it's made up of the collections of the Ancient Library of the Seminary of Orihuela and includes a copy of the Antwerp Polyglot Bible. This bible, of which only 1,213 copies were published, was printed by Christoffel Plantin (1520-1589) in his Antwerp printing house between 1569 and 1572, under the patronage of Philip II, and under the direction of the theologian Benedicto Arias Montano, chaplain to the king. The exhibition will remain open until the end of May.
Saturday April 22 at 12 noon, there will be a street theatre performance of 'Treasure Island' in the Plaza de El Salvador.
At 7pm on Saturday, the Cathedral courtyard will be the setting of another street performance, 'The Magic Beans'.
From 9pm to midnight on Saturday, there will be different performances of Spanish plays in different parts of Orihuela's historic quarter. On the façade of the church of Santas Justa y Rufina, 'Yerma' by Federico García Lorca will be performed; in the Plaza de El Salvador, 'La Celestina' by Fernando de Rojas will be staged; in the Cathedral courtyard, 'Hombres necios que acusáis' by Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, and in the Plaza Ramón Sijé there will be a performance of 'Angelina o el honor de un brigadier' by Jardiel Poncela.
Sunday April 23 at 12 noon, a family activity entitled 'Coloured Monster' will take place in the Plaza de El Salvador.
On Sunday, Orihuela Costa will also join in the celebration with various activities in Los Cucalos between 12 noon and 7pm, including a book exchange and readings of texts by William Shakespeare in English and Miguel de Cervantes in Spanish, as well as live music.
