ARCHIVED - Aquarium repairs completed at the CIMAR Museum of the Sea in Aguilas Mayoress Mari Carmen Moreno and Councillor Bartolo Hernández paid a visit on Friday to the Centro de Interpretación del Mar (Cimar) in Águilas, where various improvements have been made using funding from the EU’s FEMP fund.

Over 50,000 euros have been invested in repairing elements of the 30,000-litre Aquarium which, unfortunately, has been defective almost since the day it was first installed. In addition, the 19-metre trawler which forms part of the museum has been given an overhaul and within the next few weeks minor repairs will be made to some of the smaller aquaria which are suffering from leakage problems.

ARCHIVED - Aquarium repairs completed at the CIMAR Museum of the Sea in Aguilas The free entry CIMAR opened in 2014 as part of a campaign to promote the attractions of the town through its historical and current links with the sea and with fishing and proved an instant success with both locals and visitors to the Costa Cálida. A visit might take no more than an hour but provides interesting insights into the town and the marine life which exists in this part of the Mediterranean.

As for the main aquarium, it is designed to hold a variety of marine species, most of which are native to the waters of the western Mediterranean. However, the first tanks seen by visitors contain species which normally live in tropical waters, such as the predatory triggerfish, angel fish, cardinal fish, soft and stony corals and the clownfish (as featured in Finding Nemo!).

This is said to be one of the largest private seashell collections in Europe, and although the most eye-catching items on display are the largest, a fascinating variety of shapes and colours can be admired.

Aguilas Tourist Office Águilas boasts 28 kilometres of coastline, with many fine, sandy beaches, sheltered coves and unspoilt natural beaches. It is a great summer favourite with Spanish holidaymakers, so always has a superb programme of concerts and activities throughout the summer, as well as the biggest carnival in the Region of Murcia, 40 days before Semana Santa (Easter.)

Throughout the year it also has a number of museums and historical attractions, a castle with fabulous views overlooking the bay and several other points of interest, all of which make it an good place to visit for days out. Throughout the year the tourist office runs monthly guided tours and the route of the railways, which explores the railway history of the town.

The tourist information office is located in the Plaza de Antonio Cortijos, just a short walk from the sea front and Plaza de España, a cool, shaded space in which to enjoy a coffee.
