ARCHIVED - Andalusia gives out more flu shots than Covid boosters in 2022
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
More than 1 million people have been vaccinated against the flu so far this winter, as opposed to 822,935 Covid booster jabs
Andalusia has already vaccinated more than one million people against flu in the current 2022 campaign, which began on October 3, as indicated by the Regional Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs in a press release. Specifically, 1,034,354 people in the autonomous community of Andalusia have received a flu jab this year, 46.7% of them over 65 years old.
In this over-65s age group, by province, Almería has 84,805 people vaccinated (45.2% coverage); Cádiz, 130,138 (37.2% coverage); Córdoba 125,399 (53.6% coverage); Granada 125,39 (454.8% coverage); Huelva 60,092 (44.1% coverage); Jaén 107,820 (55.9% coverage); Málaga 176,623 (36.9% coverage), and Seville 224,014 (41.5% coverage). In last year’s flu campaign, overall coverage in the over-65s reached 73.2%.
In this same period, since October 3, 2022, 822,935 Covid booster vaccines have been administered in Andalusia — 63,781 doses in Almería; 109,011 in Cádiz; 101,367 in Córdoba; 97,265 in Granada; 47,592 in Huelva; 80,155 in Jaén; 137,118 in Málaga, and 186,646 in Seville. This is despite the fact that in many places and for many patients, joint flu and Covid jabs are being offered at the same time, suggesting that more than 200,000 people who were eligible for the flu shot have refused the latest Covid vaccine, or were not eligible for it.
As for the coverage of booster doses, known as the fourth dose, more than 33% of the population over 60 years of age has been vaccinated to date. It is worth noting that a total of 19,581,909 doses have been administered since the start of vaccination against Covid in Andalusia in December 2020.
The flu vaccination campaign and booster doses for the autumn 2022 campaign began on October 3, when people in residential care homes for the elderly and disabled began to receive the joint flu and Covid vaccination, along with people over 80 years of age and the staff and trainees of health and social-health centres, residences and disability centres.
On October 17, the flu and Covid vaccinations were made available for people between 65 and 79 years of age, as well as for those between 5 and 64 years of age with chronic pathologies, pregnant women, dependent adults and their carers. On this date, children aged between 6 and 59 months began to receive only the flu vaccine.
On October 24, people between 60 and 64 years of age began being vaccinated against Covid. From this date onwards, professional groups, such as law enforcement agencies, began to be vaccinated against the flu. In the case of penitentiary institutions, vaccination against Covid was started.
From December 2022, depending on the availability of doses, influenza and Covid vaccination will be given to those living in a household with persons aged 65 years or older or persons at risk.
People included in the vaccination groups can request appointments through the usual channels such as the ClicSalud+ website, the Salud Andalucía App and Salud Responde, by telephone through Salud Responde or by contacting their health centre.
