There has been a very slight increase in the incidence rate this week but this still hasn’t translated into more serious illnesses; in fact, both hospital and intensive care admissions have dropped again over the last seven days.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health registered an additional 18,798 cases of coronavirus in its latest update on Friday December 23, of which 10,854 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,670,037.
Cumulative incidence rate
After dropping slightly last week, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has registered a small increase, rising from 156 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 160.84. However, the 7-day day figure, standing at 75.55, still remains more than 50% below the two-rate, an excellent indication that the health situation remains relatively stable.
When it comes to the different autonomous communities, Andalucia maintains the lowest incidence rate, standing at 60.14 cases this week, although the number has increase by a couple of points. Cantabria is currently faring the worst, with 284.44 infections per 100,000 people while the Valencian Community is sticking below the national average, with 141.57 cases.
Fatalities and hospitalisations
The Ministry has registered a further 241 Covid-related fatalities, of which 98 have been reported in the last week. This brings the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 116,899.
The most promising news in the latest report comes in terms of hospital pressure, which has dropped substantially for the second consecutive week.
The number of people hospitalized for Covid-19 in Spain has decreased by 7.58% in the last 7 days. Likewise, the number of patients in the ICU has decreased by 13.3% compared to last Friday.
There are currently 4,095 people admitted for Covid in Spain, 336 fewer than the same day last week, while 233 patients are being treated for more severe symptoms in the country’s ICUs – a drop of 36.
This means that 3.28% of all hospital beds are occupied by coronavirus patients (down from 3.54% last Friday) while the occupancy rate in intensive care has fallen from 3.05% a week ago to 2.65% today.
Vaccination data
December 27 marks the two-year anniversary of the date the very first coronavirus vaccination was administered in Spain and today, 92.9% of the population (39,202,284 people) are double jabbed. In addition, 39,279,291 people over the age of 12, or 93.1% of the population, have received at least one dose.
