Intensive care admissions have increased by 6% in Spain in the last week

The evolution of the coronavirus pandemic in Spain has taking a worrying turn this week, with the number of people hospitalised because of Covid rising steadily. This is despite the fact that the incidence rate has dropped in practically every region and daily infections have dropped compared to the same day last week.

Specifically, general hospital admissions have grown by 2% in the last seven days while the number of people being treated in intensive care has risen by 6%.

Coronavirus infections

The Ministry of Health has reported 19,303 new coronavirus cases in its latest update on Friday December 2, which brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,614,807.

Cumulative incidence rate

In a very positive development, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has dropped 16 points in the past week to stand at 165.38 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

The 7-day incidence rate in citizens aged 60 or over has also fallen from 81.39 to 77.09 cases. Crucially, this number is more than half the 14-day figure, which is a positive indication that infections are on the decline in general.

Looking at the incidence by autonomous community, Andalucia continues to have the best figures, standing at 57.33 cases this week. In contrast, the Canary Islands are suffering a worrying rebound, registering 276.39 cases per 100,000 this week, the highest figure in the country.

The Valencian Community is faring well and is now well under the national average, with an incidence rate of 143.47 cases per 100,000.

Hospitalisations and fatalities

There are currently 3,856 patients admitted to hospital throughout Spain (an increase of 77 people compared to last Friday) while 229 people are being treated for more serious conditions in intensive care (an increase of 13).

This means that 3.09% of all hospital beds are occupied by Covid patients while the occupancy rate in intensive care is at 2.60%.

A further 88 Covid-related fatalities were reported in the update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 116,108 people.

Vaccination data

As of December 5, 92.9% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,171,162 people have now received two doses.

In addition, 39,276,917 people (93.1%) have had at least one dose.
