Less than 2% of Intensive Care beds in Spain are occupied by Covid patients

In the first pandemic report published since the Spanish government announced that it would be abolishing mandatory masks on public transport on February 7, the cumulative incidence rate has taken a huge nosedive and fallen to 67 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, definitively indicating that Spain has dodged the dreaded seventh pandemic wave.

To put this into perspective, the 14-day incidence rate on the same date a year ago was a frightening 2,879 cases per 100,000.

Coronavirus infections

The Ministry of Health registered an additional 8,801 cases of coronavirus on Friday January 27.

Of the total infections, 5,277 were diagnosed in people over the age of 60, which is a considerable decrease on the 7,084 registered last Friday.

This brings the total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,731,478.

Cumulative incidence rate

The 14-day cumulative incidence rate has dropped by an impressive 30 points, falling to 67.58 cases per 100,000 inhabitants compared to 97.64 last week. In addition, the 7-day figure, standing at 26.02, still remains more than 50% below the two-week rate, an excellent indication that the health situation remains relatively stable.

In the past two weeks, a total of 3,205 positives have been registered in the over 60s age group.

When it comes to the different autonomous communities, Andalucia has regained the best spot and now has the lowest incidence rate in country, with 32.10 cases per 100,000.

The Canary Islands is currently faring the worst, with 151.42 infections per 100,000 people while the Valencian Community is just a tad above the national average, with 69.16 cases.

The highest incidence continues to be recorded in people over the age of 80, with a rate of 131.65 cases this week, followed by those aged between 70 and 79 (60.37) and between 60 and 69 (39.38).

Fatalities and hospitalisations

A further 109 Covid-related fatalities have been reported in the last 7 days, bringing the total number of deaths in Spain up to 118,434.

There are currently 2,341 patients admitted to hospitals across Spain with Covid, compared to 2,914 last Friday. At the moment, 177 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the ICU, which is a considerable reduction of 43.

These figures mean that 2.01% of all intensive care beds are occupied by people with a positive diagnosis (down from 2.5%) while the general occupancy rate is just 1.87%, down from 2.32% a week ago.

Vaccination data

As of January 30, 92.9% of the population over 12 (39,206,094 people) are double jabbed. In addition, 39,282,740 people over the age of 12, or 93.1% of the population, have received at least one dose.

Among the more vulnerable over 60s, 91.9% have received a booster dose, although only 58.2% have had the fourth jab, specifically adapted to tackle the Omicron variant.
