ARCHIVED - Germans advised to forget possible holidays in Spain this summer
International tourism in Spain is likely to be wiped out for the forthcoming summer season
Thomas Bareiss, Germany’s Federal Government Commissioner for Tourism, has warned the country’s population of 83 million that they should begin to accept that this year it will not be possible for them to take holidays abroad, specifically naming the Spanish beaches as one of the favoured destinations which will be out of bounds for them as the coronavirus pandemic continues to affect travel worldwide.
Herr Bareiss stated in an interview that a quick resumption of tourist travel to Spain, Greece and Turkey is “more than improbable”, effectively confirming that the Spanish tourism industry will lose at least one of the most important sources of international visitors for the remainder of 2020.
Last year 11.18 million people visited Spain from Germany, accounting for around 13.3 per cent of the 83.7 million visitors from abroad during the year. Only the UK exceeded the contribution made by Germany (with 18.1 million visitors), but British nationals are also extremely unlikely to be holidaying on the Costas this year: Hugh Elliott, the UK ambassador in Madrid, has said that British tourists will return to Spain but “not in the next few months”, and until the fear of travelling has subsided it is hard to imagine hordes of tourists flocking to the beaches of Spain.
The fear factor is an important one, of course, but in addition, airlines are not operating their usual services at present, and some have indicated that if they are required to maintain social distancing on board aircraft by leaving seats vacant it will not be financially viable for them to do so. This factor is recognized by Thomas Bareiss, who explained to his fellow Germans that this year tourism would almost certainly have to be domestic if it happens at all.
The need to regenerate the tourism sector is a particularly pressing one in Spain, where in “normal” years it accounts for well over 10 per cent of the national economy (and employment), but for the foreseeable future the number of international visitors to this country will be extremely limited. Needless to say, it is not only leisure tourism which is suffering: business trips are also made extremely difficult to organize, and Herr Bareiss anticipates that inter-continental travel will continue to be especially complicated due to the closure of frontiers and restrictions on movement at airports.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
