ARCHIVED - Infections climb but hospitalisations drop: Murcia Covid update October 25
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
Murcia bucks the Spanish trend and reduces its coronavirus incidence rate
While health experts in Spain seem close to pushing the panic button on yet another devastating coronavirus pandemic wave, the Region of Murcia is, for the moment, keeping the health crisis in check. The average incidence is see-sawing, as it is in many other regions, but crucially this isn’t translating into increased hospital pressure.
In fact, since the last update a week ago, patient numbers on general hospital wards and in intensive care have plummeted.
Coronavirus infections
The Region of Murcia has registered a total of 669 cases of coronavirus in the latest update published on Monday October 24, a tiny decrease on the 625 infections reported on the same day last week.
This brings the overall number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic to 458,647.
Of the total cases, 86,494 have been diagnosed in people over the age of 60.
Cumulative incidence rate
The latest data provided by the regional health authorities on Monday show that the 7-day cumulative incidence rate has taken another welcome dip, dropping from 116.75 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to 95.42. This is an excellent indication that infection numbers should continue to fall in the coming days.
More significantly, the more important average incidence over a two-week period has actually decreased for the second consecutive week from 242.64 cases to 213.68.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Hospital pressure is where the biggest improvement can be seen this week, with the number of patients admitted for Covid in the Region increasing to 38 (16 fewer compared to the same day last week). Of these, 1 person is being treated in ICUs for more serious conditions (up from 2 last Monday).
Four more Covid-related fatalities have been registered, bringing the overall death toll since the start of the health crisis to 2,461.
Covid testing
The Region of Murcia has carried out 3,192,026 PCR and antigen coronavirus detection tests.
Vaccination data
According to Spanish Ministry of Health data, 94% of the population of the Murcia Region over the age of 12 has had a least one dose. In addition, 93.60% of people are now double jabbed.
